I hate to break it to all of you, but Missouri is a purple state...it tends to lean conservative on social issues, but McCain only won the Show-Me State by 6,000 votes. We voted for Clinton both times in the 90's and Bush both times this decade. Those of you attempting to "escape" liberalism in California or elsewhere by moving to Missouri will surely be disappointed. While we lack the overly bloated, ineffective, and nearly insolvent state government of California, you will certainly find pockets of progressivism and liberalism in every corner of Missouri.
Missouri has its problems just like any other state. Curmudgeon, I actually found your comment about a lack of piercings/tattoos on youth a little surprising...my old middle/high school in the Ozarks recently banned all piercings (outside of ears, of course)...kids as young as 14 were coming to class with studs in their bottom lips...and their parents had signed waivers to allow their children to be pierced!
I love Missouri and am very glad to be here..I could easily live and work elsewhere, yet choose to call Missouri my home. However, it is not without its problems, and those expecting Missouri (or any other place) to be a utopia, will likely be disappointed.

A few Cali's

Well being an ex-Cali myself I can answer for myself. When my husband and I retired we left California so we could maximize our retirement dollars, slow down the pace, and do something different. We didn't hate California...our jobs were there, I was born there, and the area provided us with great employement opportunities. We didn't resent all of the people who moved INTO the state from other states to get an education, to work, to enjoy the weather, to take advantage of the employment opportunities. But the reality was that our location was expensive and our hard earned dollars would go further elsewhere.
So we moved to Las Vegas. I loved it, my husband not so much. He wanted trees, fishing, etc. So we began looking. We looked at Tennesee, Kentucky, Washington, New Mexico, Colorado, N. Carolina, Arkansas, Wyoming, Missouri and more. All had problems, most had things we loved, things we hated (winter). Some had a low/no income tax but high sales tax, some had no sales tax, but high real estate tax...some had high taxes in general. Some taxed social security, some didn't. In the end, we made a decision to move to Missouri to be close to my dad.
It was an area that didn't have extreme's of any of our parameters...winter didn't include feet of snow, taxes (in one form or another) were no worse than CA other than MO taxes social security (although they are phasing that out of the next several years), and there were all of the trees, lakes & fishing missing in S. Nevada. So here we came. We had lived in Missouri before and had owned property here for 30 years. So it seemed a no-brainer.
Do I like it here? Mostly: Could do without the snakes, ticks, and ice. Are there things I miss? A few: Trader Joe's, the beach, fresh picked oranges.
Is it full of Californians? Nope. I laugh when I hear this one. I've met more people from AZ, OK, AR, Florida, Iowa, and Illinois than from anywhere else. Looking at the phonebook from the Springfield Women's Club for Newcomers people have relocated here from all over the U.S. Sure there are people moving here from CA just like they are in any state...or FROM any state.
California is a HUGE state with an enormous population so perhaps it just feels like there are a lot of them.
Perhaps someone who knows how to do this stuff should set up a poll in the Missouri forum to find out where people are from.

I don't know OA, I just don't see it. Most of the people that I know that vote democratic just do it because that's the way they and their Daddy before them always voted, and they don't pay a whole lot of attention to the issues. Still they are dyed in the wool conservatives no doubt.
I know your folks have liberal friends down in Mtn. View (wasn't it Mtn View?), but I wouldn't move here counting on finding a "pocket" of liberals - at least not in the rural parts.

The rural areas near St. Joseph aren't bad.
