Just moved here from AZ. The only thing I'm missing (besides a job) is good mexican food. Need help finding a mexican place in or around Springfield, MO. The first place we tryed was Mexican Villa.....THAT WAS BAD, really bad.

Same here, though we came from Ohio. Lots of Mexican restaurants in Springfield, all claiming to be authentic of course. We have only tried The Purple Burrito on S. Campbell just North of Sunshine on the right (East). Not too bad. We haven't been satisfied with the Mexican grocery stores. So far we haven't found anyone who is making fresh tortillas. Someone in Nixa just posted on Craigs List that she makes good tamales. There's also The Tamale King on Sunshine (?). Let us know what else you end up trying and we'll do the same.

We moved here from New Mexico several years ago and
missed good mexican food. We found the El Imperial
in Cabool to be fantastic. It's not in Springfield but it's
not far and worth the drive!

Well, so much for me recommending Mexican Villa. I like the Mexican food at Georges Steakhouse. About 40 percent of the time that we eat there (which is quite often), I order Mexican.

There are lots of "upscale" lah-de-dah joints around, if that is what you are looking for, I'm sure you'll get a lot of recommendations.

I like Mexican Villa's burrito enchilada style. It's the only thing I've ever had there. We've passed Georges for years and I never thought about going there. Next time we're down Springfield way, we'll have to give it a try!

There is a regional chain (OK - AR - MO) called El Charro that offers pretty good authentic Mexican food. I believe they are all family-owned. A Google search turns up nearby establishments of the same name in Republic and Marshfield:

El Charro Authentic Mexican
1668 US Highway 60 E
Republic, MO 65738-9483
(417) 732-2806

El Charro
1369 Spur Dr
Marshfield, MO 65706-2311
(417) 468-2240

I'm honestly not sure if either of these are related to the regional chain I'm familiar with. You may want to call and ask. The ones I've been to all go by "Authentic Mexican", so the one in Republic is likely the real deal.

You should also really try some Springfield cashew chicken. I'm a fan of Peking House, but there are many places I haven't tried that are probably also good.

Wink "Comfort" Mexican Food...

It's all in what you're used to. The folks around here who grew up on Mexican Villa still love it. Like other "ethnic" restaurants trying to get a following back in the day, they had to Americanize their menu to be accepted. There's a great story about Chinese food trying to make it's way into Springfield and the "invention" of Cashew Chicken.

In the 15 or so years I've been here, there's been a huge influx of different kinds of Mexican restaurants, due largely to the increased demand for the kind of Mexican food we Califoreigners are "used to"... It's not "upscale" by any means...it's more authentic but please, not TOO authentic!!!

One of my best and dearest transplant friends here on City-Data (and in real life) will tell you there is NO good Mexican food here, she's a Santa Fe gal. Whatever.

I like Cielito Lindo in Springfield, and La Hacienda...or Little Hacienda as they call the one in Hollister. I also like Baja Grill on Campbell just north of Battlefield (owned by the folks who brought you Tamale King)...and Maria's in downtown Springfield used to have smokin' fish tacos...and there's a "new" authentic sounding spot on the corner of Sunshine & Glenstone in the old Wendy's...
I love the Tacos de Carne Asada at Tequila's in Branson West...and there's a new "Sonora Style" mex spot on old Hwy 13 in Branson West that EVEN the venerable Mrs. Chilicook has deigned "pretty good"... That's my next meal.

And since I moved from Springberg 5+ years ago, I'm sure there's new Mex spots I'm not aware of...anyone...?

OH! ...and I nearly forgot Cantina Laredo on the Landing, which I dearly love for the freshly made guacamole & make-you-want-to-cry Mojitos. (Try a Mango Mojito...!) But they're a big chain so it's not so much down-and-dirty authentic but the setting right on Lake Taneycomo is hard to beat.

If there is lots of Mexican places in the area, Lets just say that's the same way Los Angeles and places like L.A. started out. They all began with one.
