Hi everyone. My husband is getting out of the military in September and we are going to move from Virginia to Springfield, MO. We are both originally from Jonesboro, Arkansas and vacationed in Branson as kids. We are very excited.
I work in the medical field and my husband is going to go back to college full time at Missouri State. We switched residence to VA when I was going to college and I wandered how long can you live in Missouri before claiming residency and getting in state tuition. Out of state tuition is going to be way more then his GI Bill will cover. We are prepared for the first year, but after that....

Also, are there any known construction companys or subdivisions that are known by locals as having a bad reputation. Where I'm from in AR, you know who to never buy a home from and I don't have that luxury of knowing and I don't want us to get into something bad.

For Missouri State University, here is a page on their official site that details exactly how one goes about 'proving' residence and the application to do so once you have 'proof':
http://www.missouristate.edu/admissions/residency.htm
Hope this helps!

ittybitty, moving to spfd. is a huge mistake. It is a miserable community of very backward people who specialize in backbiting and character assassination. The violent crime rates here are horrendous. It is a very angry, cultural desert. I would rethink your decision to come here.

You dug up a nearly three-year-old thread to make this your very first post on the forum??? Wow, someone has a serious ax to grind.

Why did you move to southern Missouri?

Well, I suppose that is moot point now, so it is my earnest desire that you find a way to get out of Springfield and out of Missouri--quickly, the sooner the better--where you can find happiness, if that is possible.

And I hope others like you who are thinking about moving to Missouri will heed your warning. Thank you for your service to Missouri.

Default To each his own....

Wow reluctantspfdian ...haven't ever heard anyone so negative about an area...and I hope you can find happiness someplace soon.

I find this area to be made up of a variety of warm caring people. I can't imagine being anywhere else where I could have found the comfort and support I rec'd in 2008 when my husband died or when I went thru breast cancer or when I hade a stroke the same year.

I belong to the Springfield Hospitality club which is a large group of women from all over the U.S. and I haven't found a single one that fits the portrait you have painted. None of my neighbors fit it, none of my friends fit it, nor any of the wonderful people I've met where I live. I don't think I fit your protrait either...I'm well educated, pretty acceptance of diversity and change, and seldom hold a grudge not alone being angry...it's not worth the effort or the calories

Not sure what a "cultural desert" consists of, but there are a variety of theaters, symphony, opera, drama, entertainment opportunities in the area. I can think of a good many other cities I would consider "cultural deserts" before Springfield.

Did you notice that the post you were responding to was three years old?
Not that it matters, because you are unhappy now...I wish you only the best in your hunt for a better life.

Sure, anyplace you will run into people that might not fit your idea of a good friend, but all in all, people here are the same as anyplace else in the U.S.

Back in the day when I was in the military you could claim anywhere you wanted as your "residence" as long as you were active duty. I'd check with someone and find out if that is still the case or not. If it is, then you don't have to worry about it.
