One thing that those that are bestowing Springfield's virtues are leaving out is the traffic problem. It might be the 2nd fastest growing metro area in the midwest as Slyder claims, but that is part of the problem. Everywhere you drive it is tied up in traffic. Simply being 3 1/2 times larger does not automatically make a town better, it just makes it different. For some, Springfield is much better. But if you are looking for more of a small town feel while still having access to good restuarants and shopping, Joplin does just fine. And if you think that you can find magical jobs in springfield that pay a lot more than Joplin does without having the right degree or experience, you are dreaming.

LOL... are you serious!? Springfield has thousands (yes thousands) of more "magical" jobs than joplin does that pay waaayyyyyyyy more. There are so many places here that pay 9-15 dollars an hour; Chase Bank, T-Mobile, Alltel, Teleteck... to many to list. In fact, the vast majority of places around here that pay minimum wage are fast food/restaurant.
Joplin is the minimum wage Capital of Missouri.

No, that's Branson
Springfield overall really doesn't have that many great jobs....$9 isn't much over minimum wage any more and Joplin is a better place to live than Springfield.
But Branson would be worst of all....it might be a nice place to visit but it's no place to call home....especially not if you are liberal, Democrat, anything but hard shell Southern Baptist, are a color other than white.....

Interesting thread. Both of these towns are nice IMO. However I haven't spent nearly as much time in Joplin as I have in Springfield.

No real difference; tornadoes hit both areas often. It's a hazard of living in southwest MO.
