For those who have lived in the St George area longer than I have what mortgage brokers do you highly recommend on not recommend in your experience with them? Would appreciate any feedback. Thanks so much.

I would just add to not be afraid to call the BBB and the Mortgage Industry Association. The entire mortgage business is in a free-fall now. There were thousands of people who got in the business over the years selling the sub-prime loans. Many had no qualifications, education and in some cases were convicted felons. Now I certainly don't imply they all were but when even the most respected and largest broker, Countrywide, sold itself to B of A to keep from going belly up you know you've got to know who your talking to. And ,in my opinion, as unregulated as Utah is you've got to do your own homework.

That's so true Rick...I know Steve has been in the business here for many years, but a call to the BBB is always a good idea...will do so myself when we mortgage the next place..seems like, real estate, everyone jumped on the bandwagon a few years ago..and I agree, as opposed to CA and all the regulations there, I wouldn't trust stuff like this in Utah at all...Everyone do your homework!

Thanks dogmom & aerorick,

It never dawned on me to call the BBB. We had a loan broker get us a horrible loan with Countrywide. He was with Amerimac Mortgage which now doesn't exist in St George. Must be operating under a new business name or gone into hiding.

I would suggest looking at Mortgage Banks in conjunction with brokers. Ask them to give you a good faith estimate (required within three days of substantial business contact), compare the fees and the rates. Good banks to check would be First Horizon & Wells Fargo. PM me if you are interested in some names. I have worked with some good lenders in town.
