Default Anyone from Hurricane?

I keep hearing that Hurricane is really windy. I'm just wondering if it's always windy or is it just when the storms pass through that area? Do the winds come up daily, weekly, certains times of the year? I'm considering relocating to Hurricane from the Salt Lake area. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

It's not windy all of the time. But when it gets windy it is really windy! It depends on the time of year. I would say it's really windy maybe once a week on average.

The wind is the ONLY thing I like about being here. Hurricane is aptly named - when it blows, it can knock you over! There's no particular time of the year for the winds - but you can certainly count on them in the spring and summer.

Default Old Saying from my ancestors

My grandfather was one of the settlers of Hurricane. The name Hurricane proves that the wind blows quite frequently. He said that someone once said "if the wind stopped blowing in Hurricane, everyone would fall over." That says it all

We are building our new home at this moment in Hurricane. We can't wait to relocate. It is beautiful and there are many things to do such as hiking, walking, driving through the beautiful surroundings , and going to see the dinosaur tracks. Sand Hollow is a beautiful lake that has red sand beaches just miles from Hurricane City.

Quail creek is a prettier lake.

When we moved over here, I was out visiting a friend in Parowan when my son called me up freaked out. Seems the winds came up and a storm was battering the house. The next day we found out that it was sustained winds of 95 mph. A hurricane to become one needs only 75 mph winds. This town does on occasion live up to it's name. Mostly it is due to it's location by the canyons. They cause the pressure variences that contriubte to wind. I'll take the winds here over the Santa Ana winds in California any day.

Hurricane is close to St. George, right? What is the cost of living like there?

It takes about 15 minutes to drive to St. George from Hurricane. Wages are between $7 to $15 per hour with most being under $10. Very few jobs can be found that pay over that. That even for electricians. A house around 1200 sq ft. will run you anywhere from $250K to over $300K. You can find some cheaper that are in need of major repairs or are just plain really old. If you wait a few years you will find the prices will fall. It is artifically over inflated here. There was an article in a magazine about 4 years ago that started the rush. It named St. George the #1 place to live in the USA. Didn't take long to ruin the reasons behind that article.

Also be warned this is heavily a Mormon/LDS area. Too many people that move here find that they can not coexist with the pervailing culture. They complain and want to change it to fit what they left behind to get away from. Change in cultures happens very slowly, measured in decades and generations. Research out about the LDS church and visit before you would move here. See if you can tolerate or fit in.

Okay, that wage ratio to housing is CRAZY! We would need to bring in 3000 a month easily and it looks like that would be difficult there. We wouldnt be buying right away but the rental prices I've seen for a 3 br house is about 1000.00 a month. So that's definitely something to consider.

I'm not worried about the Mormom culture at all. I am a Jehovah's Witness myself and I know there are two congregations in the area. We talk to Mormons alot in our local ministry and usually have very good conversations with them, in spite of very distinct differences in our beliefs.

Two of my good friends are J Dubs, We just agreed up front not to talk relgion. Not hard for me, but it gets hard sometimes for them. Other than that we have a lot of fun together.

Like I said give it a couple of years before you would head this way. The housing chaos might have come down to realistic by then. That doesn't help the health problems you are having now. It just gives you more time to research and visit.
