Saint George airport flight patterns
How will the new airport affect the citizens of Saint George and Cedar City in regard to flight paths. The area I live in now was very quiet until Long Beach airport expanded. Now we have "Jet Blue" flying over our neighborhood which has ruined our quality of life. We are retireing next year and are considering southern Utah, but that new airport concerns me. Does anyone have any information in regard to the new airport.

All that I've read about the new airport has pointed toward a very low impact on the residential presence of the area.
It will use an approach procedure designed to keep aircraft as high as possible. They will also try to keep planes to the west of Zion National Park in order to lessen the noise impact on the park itself.
IMO, St. George really needs this new airport. The present one is just not adequate to handle the growing population of the area. The population of greater St. George is now starting to approach 200,000 or will reach that figure in the next few years.
From all that I've read, it will be state-of-the-art. I look forward to it. I don't think you should worry.

Hey 'rocco, Has anything been indicated as to what will happen with the old airport when the new one is done?

Hi sofam. Well, I've heard that it will be developed into a mixed-use residential/commercial planned community with numerous parks, etc. Very imressive plans. I remember reading an article in the local paper about it last year. If I can find the article online, I'll try to post it but I doubt if they'll have it acrhived.
I do have the link to the city's redevelopment plan which is quite comprehensive ...maybe too much mumbo-jumbo to digest but it does describe the details as to types of buildings and dimensions of streets, etc. They even have some picture examples of building types for each section of the development. It's in PDF.
http://www.sgcity.org/airport/pdf/AirportRedevPlan.pdf
You'll have to copy and paste the URL into your browser as this forum doesn't allow hyperlinks.
It's actually pretty interesting if you have the time to sift through it.

Thanks 'rocco, Just curiosity on my part. I know they invested money in the taxiways at the end of '05 and early 06 as I worked on it. Always amazing how willing our 'servants' are to spend money that will be torn up in a few years. But then with homeland security, it seems like airports large and small are all spending money like crazy. In the last two years, new pavements or extentions for SLC, Provo, Ogden, Brigham City, Nephi, Kanab, Panguitch and work is currently underway at Moab and Monticello and that doesn't include ones that may have been done that I don't know about.

oh, btw, that redevelopment plan I referred to in the above post is over a year old. The only reason I mentioned the article in The Spectrum is that it may have updated the plans ...I can't really remember exactly.

oh, interesting. You worked on it? Yeah, you're right about the "spending money" issue. I understand what you're saying.
