Talking reply to you moving to St. George...

um hi. i saw all your opinions from older people and maybe i thought i could throw my 22 yr old perception of st george out there as well perhaps. so heres all the GOOD things people forgot to run by you. I was born and raised in southern CA and miss it very much but came to Utah to have a fresh start of something new and different. Thats exactly what i found. It offers fresh air and wide open spaces. Utah is a very very beautiful state. it has everything you could want for the outdoors. from the really really green nature to the sky scraping mountains. The waterfalls of provo canyon to the greatest national parks. The red desert rock to the blue green lakes that are located pretty much everywhere. Its all beautiful. There is a lot of oppurtunities for many different types of things and hobbies. southern Utah has the very high tempatures and also can get to 30 below in northern UT. In st. george it gets up to 115 in the summer! its scourching hot with plenty of sun, and the winters are pretty bitter cold but spring and fall are pefect times for weather. St george weather has a way of suprising everyone because it can be windy one day & completely calm the next, pouring rain one day to bright and sunny the next. but most of the time st george has its normal light rain here and there maybe once every two weeks, if that. Its a town where people tend to overrate it or underrate it and id like to tell you after living here for 7 yrs. its all around great i like all it has to offer and i believe you can make things work pretty much anywhere you go. its all up to YOU and the effort you put forth to enjoy and make the best of things, realizing all there is to offer. People are constantly worried about mormons and utah and its all a big joke! Mormons are NORMAL people, i promise. They are very talked up to be people they arent and people NOT from Utah (such as myself at one time) tend to have their own ideas about them. that are far from the truth. ill tell you first, that most of what you HEAR about mormons are lies or made up things. People like to critisize what they dont understand.
And the mormon religion is very tough for most people to understand. I had been many places, ive had many different beliefs, and i was converted to the LDS church at an older age, it was MY choice. I prayed more then i ever have and felt it was true. i think everyone that finds what they believe & have everlasting faith in, whatever it may be, are strong/wise people. i believe if you show love, you will be loved, if you care and have compassion it will be given unto you as well. i believe in loving the lord and my neighbor with all my heart. Being converted as an LDS member of the church of latter day saints has
been the most life changing experience for me and ive gotten a much better love and understanding for the people and the church. LDS people will not FORCE their religion on you, [thats an opinion of non members.] The LDS people simply love and appreciate their gospel and teachings and want to SHARE it with as many as they can. (just like every other religion) The LDS people say this: THE CHURCH IS PERFECT, THE PEOPLE ARE NOT. meaning... we as mormons also make mistakes and accept that. Very many mormons tend to judge, it is true. its a very unforunate thing that the church doesnt believe is right, and yet still there are those members who look down on others, giving the church a bad look. St george DOES have a lot of cliques but honestly most of the people are down to earth if you walk up and introduce yourself. make yourself known dont be shy and be happy and you will never have any problems getting to know people here. St george, like anywhere, doesnt like people coming here with bad attitudes, theres way too many of those people flowing in as we speak from the big cities and here we all appreciate the generous ones.
the more people you know the better out here & the more you will see the variety and appreciate living here. everyones pretty polite and giving. its the kinda place that will definitly help you out if your on the side of the road in distress or ever need a helping hand, with moving, or christmas lights, and so forth, usually someone will come help you just because.
my young cousin had most of her christmas in gift cards and lost her entire wallet with all of them in it plus she lost all of her money. she put an add in the paper and didnt think much would happen. the next day people from all of st george donated a total of 800 dollars to her plus gift cards for a variety of stores. She also recieved letters of sympathy in the mail. thats just an example to tell you of how this community comes together to help. also during the flood of santa clara, everyone was sand bagging walls and houses and giving to one another in anyway possible. its a very good place to raise a family id say. Its a super CLEAN community. there isnt much crime. i think the main things to worry about are stealing, and wreckless driving. Most crime happens in the Dixie downs area. Theres been rumors of gang related activity there. funny i live near there in a much safer place called green valley, st george. the population in st george is rising so fast. (40% last yr) big stars have come here and bought houses their first visit here cuz they liked it so much. there are many famous Spa's that i suggest you visit yourself. rock climbing, river rafting, and camping are common. there are many caves that you can hike through. Scenery is great. We have some of the BEST sunsets. lots of hiking, mountain biking, snow boarding at Brianhead resort which is only about an hour and a half away. mtns are 30 min. away. or theres Vegas only and hour and a half away. its pretty much in the middle of everything you need. bugs are not bad, there just like anywhere else. ive never had a problem with any bugs ive always got my house sprayed and its not ever a problem. we do have pretty poor restraunts and retail but i shop in vegas mostly anyway. we have restraunts and cafes such as.... Texas Roadhouse, Olive Garden, Samuari 21 japenese steakhouse, La soire, Bajios, Ruby Tuesday, Outback, Cafe Rio, Panda Express, Starbucks, Toms deli, Perks, and Pizza Factory etc etc. stores consist of... old navy, ross, tj max, buckle, pacsun, american eagle, zumies, areopostale, dillards, jc penny, the outside mall and inside mall etc etc.... nothing exciting or great. Theres not many things out of the ordinary about st g that you really should know. well actually being from california there is one thing that boggled my mind a bit...
on occasion you might find yourself walking through wal-mart and spotting a very oddly dressed "clan" of pioneer witch craft dressed women and children...probably with one guy following far behind. if you arent familiar with them they might turn your head. they arent mormons, they branched off from the church. they are known as pligs, or pligamists (spelling?) most people try to be nice to them and talk to them but they dont usually ever speak to anyone else but themselves. One of them had spoke to their children as my family passed and said, "dont talk to those people, they arent good people." if that doesnt freak you out a bit then maybe it was just me but it was and interesting discovery for my first time in utah.
we DO need a drive-in here, dance club, or roller skating ring. SOMETHING fun and entertaining because when people arent long boarding, out at the lake, excercising, riding dirt bikes, skim boarding on the river, working, or going to school they mostly just go bowling, out to eat, or hang out at their friends. Theres very massive houses in stonecliff, ivins, & green springs or pretty much anywhere on the cliffs above st george. if i were you i would rent before i buy... its smart. as for schools, yes there are many punks, preppys, and jocks and so forth, but theres mostly all around good kids here. every school has something unique to offer to every one of them. you will find VERY many beautiful people here of all kinds. most are pretty tan {thanks to all the sun} good looking, outgoing, and well rounded people out here.
a lot of what Thompson told you in his first reply was true about st george but he did leave out all the best parts. Heres some more things for you to think through while you make your decision on the move but whatever you do enjoy it and good luck with everything!!!

Dixie Downs is the far west portion of Saint George right by Santa Clara.

And it's about as dangerous as Disneyland. Sure, there's bound to be a pickpocket there somewhere, but the worst thing that's likely to happen to you is you'll get sunburned standing in a long, boring line.

Default need a job

Hello to All in St. George Utah!
I am new to this forum and fairly new to St. George (6 months). Grew up in Hawaii, lived in S. Cal for 14 years, moved to Salt Lake in 1994. I am not of the LDS faith, but survived nonetheless.
I am looking for a job here but am having a hard time. There are tons of job openings for laborers and sales clerks, but little for decent paying white collar positions.
I am wondering if there is a secret to finding employment down here. I am very educated with a Masters in Business, worked for the same company up north for over 10 years. It seems to me that the same people who run religion down here do the hiring. I've been on every job website I could find. Any tips out there?

St. George is a pit of low paying jobs. Case closed.

Talking Ut Here I Come

I'm moving to Utah and couldn't me more thrilled with the people and the scenery. I love people who live life with conviction. Mormons live with conviction. The Mormon history is so amazing. I am a huge outdoors men who loves hiking long days in the back country on 100 plus yr old Mormon routes. Most people don't realize most of this countries expansion west has been due to the Mormon plight. More trails and routes were founded with Mormon blood sweat and tears than most people even realize. Thank you!I live in NYC where we all have tons of life in us but I'm tired of the rat race. I need peace and isolation. I'm tired of neighbors and congestion and crime. So me being a non religious and accepting of no god as savior from anything person I am sure to be left alone. Hopefully shunned. When I crave intelligent dialog an LDS member will surely be there for lively conversation. But I have a feeling me and my girlfriend and my dog will have a great time. We do not like kids or neighbors. We don't drink do drugs or smoke. We do this as a healthy life style choice. We are good and honest and hard working. From the outside you may think we are LDS but ha ha ha were just good people enjoying a healthy life in the most beautiful state in the union. Guess what we will not be burning in hell because if GOD is all knowing and you believe NOTHING happens w/o GODS knowledge then God put me here to be who I am and loves me just like he loves you. Your own doctrine tells you so why don't you believe it!!! ha just kiddin can't wait
joe

Hi Joe, where are you going to live with no kids and neighbors? I would sure check out some different areas if that is what you are looking for. Lots of kids in this town.

Sounds like you have a good attitude, just remember when you get here to relax and enjoy the beauty and don't get caught up in all the nonsense that goes on.
