I am enjoying reading the posts about St. George. My husband and I are moving there in December. We are in our early 50's and want to be closer to our children. We both plan on working but look forward to the family oriented community spirit. We are non LDS and I don't forsee a problem making friends. Hope someday we can meet some of the wonderful people we keep hearing about.

Red is right- red dirt, red rocks. And when that wind in Hurricane kicks up, it goes everywhere. (which I actually like) The summers are miserable. And, unless you hike, bike or golf, there's not much to do here. Once you've been to Zion or Bryce, that's it. You have to drive up to SLC to go to a zoo or do anything. Vegas is only 2 hours south, but it's so crowded and the traffic is horrible these days. I miss my harbor, my zoo, old town, and being closer than 2 hours to a decent airport. Once this market picks up again, I am SOOO gone! (anyone want to buy a house??)

Hey guys,
Thanks so much for all the positive info! My husband and I were considering moving to Boulder City Nv at first but after seeing pictures and reading so many positive comments about St. George, we are strongly considering moving to the area in 2009. My husband is a plumber-working both repair and new construction-so I don't think he'll have a hard time finding work. He also does auto pinstriping and knows the west is a far better market for that skill. The weather sounds wonderful to us (we hate the cold and allergies) and our only concern is the high housing price.
Anyway, you guys have answered many of our questions. I think it sounds like a great place to live. We are planning a trip in the spring to visit the area and look around. Can ya'll give us some ideas of surrounding areas w/ lower housing prices but very close to the City? We are coming from 20 acres in Tennessee so it would be really difficult for us to go to less than 1/2 an acre. Also, if you could give me an ideaof the distance from the city, that would be helpful.
Ashley

LaVerkin........anyones comment?
I searched threads that mentioned LaVerkin and found this one and even though this is an old thread I thought I would post my question here and not start a new thread. I noticed people were commenting in 2006 when prices were very high in the St. George area. Of course as we all know they have come down considerably.
I really would like to hear peoples opinions on LaVerkin. I realize it is far from shopping and the middle of St. George when I was there. We found a house a month and a half ago that we really liked on our visit there looking for homes. Now that same house had dropped 18,000. The house has everything I want and now is affordable.....and low and behold. no its not a short sale, as now there are many of those. But I wonder about the area, if people think shopping is just too far, are the neighboorhoods nice, is there snow there, etc
Any comments would be appreciated.

Hi....I live on the border of LaVerkin and Hurricane. We've been here for over 4 years and are absolutely in love with the area. It's great living so close to Zion. I do alot of hiking up there.
LaVerkin is a very small town. It has a few businesses and a Farmers Market. That area has not grown much but Hurricane is growing now. We are about to open a Walgreen's and Wal-Mart. It's starting to get a few more restaurants. It's supposed to eventually be larger than St George but it has a long way to go. St George will be opening a new airport in Nov 2011. They just broke ground a couple of days ago. There are plenty of places to shop in St George which is about a 1/2 hour from here.
We do get a little snow every year. Maybe, 3 times a year. It doesn't snow enough to mess up the roads. Just enough to look beautiful and build some snowmen. The summers can be brutally hot. We have hit as high as 115. We usually stay in the 100's from the end of June through about the middle of September. We did have a milder summer this year. We also usually have wildfires in the summer but we escaped that this year also. We don't get much rain but when it does, it's very pleasant.
My husband and I are going to retire here. I don't think there's any place like it in this country. It's a fantastic place to live!

Thank you for that information. We are weighing out getting a bigger house for less money in La Verkin or paying a little more for a smaller home in St George. Alot of it depends on how hard it will be to rent the home in LaVerkin. I think it is really pretty in Laverkin. The views are nice from what we could see. I am sure it gets really hot there. My husband is from a lot of humidity, so I told him he could handle it because its the "dry heat" and I have learned there is a definite difference after living in both.
