Yep, definitely worth a walk around! Plenty of restaurants and bars nearby. Plus, I think they still do house tours twice a year for fundraising purposes--I love going to them.

I love this thread and the pictures are beyond awesome. In fact, they made me cry. I was born and raised in St. Louis and grew up in South St. Louis in the Tower Grove area. Tower Grove Park was our playground. I recognized many of the houses in the Compton pictures.

I've been gone since 1971 but, got back often while my Mom was still alive. After she passed about 10 years ago I just never went back. Last year a close friend asked me to show her St. Louis. She had never been there. We went and had a wonderful time. I was so proud of my City. The last time I had been back to the Tower Grove area it was rundown with many of the once gorgeous homes gone to near slum conditions. South Grand looked scary and was no longer the safe, clean shopping district I had grown up in.

But, this trip was so different. My wonderful TG area looked amazing! So many of the houses had been renovated and I was told many sold in the over $400,000 range! I saw families and S. Grand was busy, clean and we had a blast walking and visiting the many shops. Had an amazing breakfast at City Diner. Even my old alma mater Roosevelt looked good.

My friend remarked on how clean the City is. As I looked about I realized she was right. It did look clean and I was proud. We stayed at the Drury near Union Station. My hubby informed me it was once the old YMCA. Gorgeous old building.

I will not stay away from home for so long ever again. St. Louis has become our favorite place to go when we have a long weekend and can get away.

No matter how long I live away, St. Louis will forever be home to me.

Great post, and it echoes how many of us in exile feel about our beautiful hometown.

I thought this would be an appropriate place to post this thread thats going in another part of CD, some interesting comments about STL, and some plain ignorant posts in general about the various cities.
Architecture Battle: San Antonio, Savannah, St. Louis, Jersey City, Portland (OR), etc

Thank you It's so strange. Where I live now is about a 7 hour drive. Long, boring drive but, the second I cross the Mississippi...I am home. Suddenly, it is 1968 and I am 15 again and cruising Hall Street and checking out all the cute boys and amazing muscle cars. Sweetest time in my life. There is nowhere or any other time I would have rather grown up.
