Default International Travel

Where all can I travel internationally in a weekend from St. Louis? Let's say I tried to catch a 6:30pm flight on a friday or took friday off, what would be some good getaways?

Toronto, Montreal,Vancouver? Mexico Any other places a bit more exotic? warmer? I'm looking to plan some short inexpensive ($500-600 or so) weekend trips throughout the year.

I'm sure DinsdalePirahna will chime in here at some point extolling the benefits of traveling out of New York or LA. I'm just curious about St. Louis. We're in a nice position to fly anywhere in the country in just about 4 hours but we don't have many international direct flights so weekend getaways might be a stretch. Any advice would be great.

This time of the year, its best to stay away from the Caribbean or the east coast of Central America. If you have never been there, i would seriously recommend Montreal or Quebec City. Definitely a foreign culture right on your doorstep. Cabo San Lucas may be a good bet too.

LA kind of sucks, would not recommend (stay in OC or Santa Barbara). NYC is a gimme. DC is also another great city to lose yourself in.

Montreal and Quebec City are amazing. Would definitely recommend. I've done short trips to Central America as well (Panama, Costa Rica).

Mexico! A couple of years ago I flew directly to Cancun and took a shuttle to the Mayan Riveria.

Mexico is an easy long weekend, and inexpensive with a lot all all-inclusive deals. THat being said, as someone who got STUCK in the Category 5 hurricane Wilma right (where the eye touched down in Playa Del Carmen) in October a few years ago... recommend waiting until after hurricane season if going to the Gulfside! NOT worth the break in price. Trust. You don't want to be in MX during a hurricane. Impossible to get out. It was a freaking nightmare.

Not international, but we are going to Keywest in 2 weeks. 5 hour flight. Delta flies direct.

PS- If you can, try to fly Delta! Until the New Year they are running a St. Louis promotion with MAJOR bonus miles, trying to snatch up the old American customers. International booking gets you 10-25 k miles for coach international, depending on destination. Note: 25 k is a standard free flight! My hubby travels 50-70% of the time and has managed to rack up 3 free tickets in the past 5 weeks.

Losing our TWA hub really sucked for St. Louis

^^ Even then we didn't have much in the way of international service, STL was always a domestic hub first. LGW and CDG in Europe and a few destinations in Mexico/Carribean/Canada. But yes, I agree, it sucks.

When I worked for TWA we used to go to San Juan for the weekend, fly out Saturday morning and back on Sunday night. Not international but it sure felt like it.
