Well played sir

I personally think any neighborhood is pretty much "safe" as long as you're not associating with the wrong crowd, or making a target of yourself. Same time, you'll have a higher chance of crime in some neighborhoods vs others...I don't know if i'd put Soulard on the "safe" list...while you're probably not going to get cut up into little bitty pieces and found in a storm drain, i've personally witnessed two guys chasing a girl down in the middle of the streets, and numerous brawls, not to mention car break-ins. While i've been down there numerous numerous times, and had my car parked out on the street without incident...I always wonder if i'd walk out to a broken window in the morning, and was always cautious of my surroundings when walking around at night....

Original Poster, while all the suggestions here are good ones, I would stick to the city suggestions...if it were me...moving from out of town...and you like urban areas.

I lived in Soulard for 3 years and know many others who have lived there as well. I have never seen anything that you are speaking of with the exception of car break ins. The other are probably drunken friends horsing around after the bars. From a personal safety point of view, Soulard ranks towards the top. Is there car break ins in Soulard? Yes but that happens all over the city.

We were at the corner of Allen and Menard, one of the guys ganked the coat off the girl knocking her down in the middle of the street, she jumped up and started running away looking more scared than happy-go-joking-around. The guys pursuing her looked very serious in their intent too. Luckily a couple of other guys from across the street saw it and intervened, less i'd have been chasing some guys around Soulard.

I think the pricing in the area is pretty good (high) which helps keep the "rift-raft" out of the area, however the bar scene attracts more bad news than the neighborhood has living there. When at work, i commonly go for jogs around soulard for exercise, along with benton park, etc and have always felt safe. I do remember one morning a crime scene around Lemp and Utah area, apparently a shooting death, which seems rare for an area that honestly is pretty nice, just a tad industrial...but the homes around there are gorgeous and upkept.

PS-

Off subject, but i had a co-worker who was shot at while walking down his front steps in the CWE. He was renting an apartment from someone in the CWE, was leaving for work around 5:45 in the morning, walked down the stoop when some guys in a car drove up and fired a couple shots out the window back window. He wasn't injured, but police did dig some .22 rounds from the brick of the building.

Yea, i'm a tea party radical, lol. I never once mentioned race in there...IF i believe that economics can play a vital role in the prosperity or ruin of a location, i think i'd be correct...I'm not saying you've gotta have money in order to make things work, but it helps.

PS, hopefully that didn't look like i think tea party individuals are radicals...but i think it does...they're different, not really radicals, but definatetly further right than the typical republican conservative...and i don't necessarily think they're racist either, i think some are, but i know others are aren't...So, let that be what it is...

Flynavyj, Gee way to scare everyone away from some of the best areas with your outlandish story. Honestly I am fairly certain it was an isolated incident. Like I said, I lived in Soulard 3 years and had no such trouble. Your from St Ann which is pretty far from these areas.

His post wasn't that bad...any neighborhood packed full of bars is bound to have a few drunken idiots on any given night. Still, I would say it's a safe place to live.
