I want to ask a question about cab fare policies in St. Louis. I have no complaint about cab service at all. It is excellent and the fares are good compared to some other cities I have lived in. However, I am running into one practice that I am not sure is "kosher".

Is it an accepted practice for drivers to add tips onto fares without waiting for the passenger to do so? For example, one time, the meter said $17 and the driver told me I owed him $20. Another time, the meter said $12.20 and the driver told me I owed him $13. I always tip the drivers anyway - unless the service was horrible - but I've never known them to just automatically add it on without my say-so.

Is this a company-approved practice in St. Louis? I did write and ask one company but they did not reply.

Which company? I can't say that's ever happened to me.

Better that I not name companies but it has happened with two of them. The last one just laughed and said he always rounds it up to the next dollar. His extra 80 cents doesn't sound like much but, in the previous case, it was several dollars. I subtracted that from what would have been his tip.

I only want to know if if I am "reading right" about what the drivers are doing and if this is acceptable to the companies before I do any complaining. Thank you.

Are these for trips to the airport or trips with multiple passengers? I know an additional $2 or $3 is added for a trip to the airport. Also, a premium is paid for multiple passengers.

No, these are just trips to local stores, doctor offices, etc. Or, home from same.

They're taking advantage of you. Pay no attention to what they say; You owe them only the amount on the meter.

Thank you. So, I can stick to the meter and add on my own tip. I thought perhaps St. Louis did it differently after running into that twice.

If it happnes with two companies, I imagine it happens with all. Not every driver does it. I only wanted to know it the company owners allow it. So far, I am not finding that out, meaning just be alert.

Ah, ok. I had thought it was a company-wide sort of thing.
