Are there any homeless shelters that will accept single guys without a mental illness? I have a college degree in sociology and I have applied at over 50 places and checked whether they were hiring at over 200 places but the job market is just absolutely awful at the moment. Both Target and McDonald's told me I was over-qualified and that they wouldn't hire people with degrees because as soon as a new job comes along, they leave and their companies end up wasting training resources. That makes sense but damn, it sucks!

If I don't find a job in the next few weeks I'm going to have exhausted all my savings and be homeless at some point in February. I want to plan adequately (I'm not originally from St. Louis so don't know of many resources) but it seems most of the shelters I've found online focus on women-only, women and children, or men who have a mental illness, addiction, or who are mentally retarded.

I can't find any resources that might help me, an able-bodied young (26) unmarried guy.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Sounds like someone needs to move back to a parent's basement like the rest of the mid-20s unemployed/underemployed college graduates.

I haven't seen my parents in fourteen years (I was a foster child).

I don't have any resources for shelters, but I did want to give you an employment idea that has worked for a few friends in a pickle: Collections.

Collections is one place it can be easy to find work (and they have high turnover so they're often hiring). I googled collections St. Louis and found this site that might prove helpful: Collection Agencies - St Louis, Missouri

I wish you the best. When my SO was unemployed in Chicago (he had a physics degree) for a couple years and applied for dozens of bank teller jobs and couldn't even get those.

When I was out of work I was able to find a little bit of money doing focus groups. A little search on google seems to bring back some promising results.

Welcome to one of the worst cities in the U.S.regarding services for the homeless. The actual total of homeless in St.L is more like 5000 not the phony one of 1400 the Mayor ( i dont have a clue nor do i care) Slay's office just released. If its 21 degrees;guess what? Your sleeping in an overcrowded flop house I affectionately call the Hotel Larry or your stuck outside. I prefer to ride the train till 1.30 A.M. then get back on at 4.20 A.M. Then I am only freezing for 3 hrs.If you don't have a bus pass good luck.
