The Northside and the Southside are both within the city limits. If anyone has any "actual" plans to improve St. Louis city they're going to have to include both areas, and not just those that are currently seen as trendy, hip, or modern....Make the Northside safe and improve the School district.
It's already been mentioned that the area has lots to offer, shopping, nightlife, parks, recreation, entertainment, etc etc etc....what it's lacking, safety and even a mediocre school district.
As for private vs public education, it tends to just be personal preference. My parents lived in the Pattonville School district, yet they chose to send me to a Catholic grade school. My graduating gradeschool class (24 students) was split on where they went to High School. The largest group went to Pattonville, some went to Hazelwood...five of us went to DeSmet, one to SLUH, one to St. Domonic, one girl went to Incarnate Word and One to Nerninx Hall. So 1/3 students went to private schools, while the others went to Public. Everyone did fine, only 1/12 didn't graduate, and only a couple got pregnant during High School. All of the private school grads did go to College, most of the public school grads did, so all in all i think it's a wash, just depends on a persons preference at the time. I do know my parents were impressed that 99% of DeSmet grads went to college...but i didn't see a number for how many of those graduated college, or were given higher paying jobs, etc....All in all, to the City - IMPROVE YOUR SCHOOLS....If they were better, more people would consider the area.

East Memphis from what I can remember wasnt urban. You still have the suburban style homes with suburban style shopping centers along poplar. Therefore they are not in the same situation as an urbanized city like St. Louis. Imo, St Louis city's issue it cannot expand like cities like Memphis. If the city of Memphis wants to annex, they can.

I agree, East Memphis is more like Clayton, Ladue, Kirkwood, and Webster Groves. Although not nearly as nice. But my point is, the reason why this huge chunk of the city didn't go downhill like the rest of Memphis is because of the abundance of private schools. Relatively wealthy people didn't flee to the suburbs for better schools because they had their private schools in East Memphis. St. Louis seems to have a lot more private schools, so you'd think that it would keep people from moving.

not really due to the type of housing and the built environment. east memphis still has that clean suburban feel that will keep some happy though within the city limits.

You sound exactly like some of my neighbors back home in Missouri that won't even venture to the north suburbs of Kansas City in fear of getting shot. They act like the whole metro area is ghetto.
I understand people wanting to be safe, but that's a little much IMO.

There has been some high profile, and increasing murders in Jeffco over the past couple of years. My buddy in Festus has been robbed twice, the meth busts down there are increasing. I think that south county and parts of south city would be quite a bit safer.
Get away from the the cul-du-sacs and there is still a ton of trailer trash and drugs in Jeffco - and where there is that, there is crime.
Do you not know what is going on in your own back yard?

true story, this: friend of a friend is a minister and lives in a far southwestern 'burb of st. louis county.... he and his sons also have concealed carry permits.... and because the daughter's wedding, at which he officiated, was in FOREST PARK, he and the sons all had their guns on them .... FOR THE WEDDING....
