Default good place for lunch on The Hill?

I'm planning to check out The Hill for the first time, looking for a good place for lunch. Would like something on the nicer side that has somewhat contemporary Italian cuisine. Any suggestions?

There are some great places to eat on the hill--none of them really strike me as contemporary Italian though, at least that I can think of. This area is much more old-school Italian. Charlie Gitto's is probably the most upscale.

And for others reading this post wanting something more casual for a quick lunch break, I love Gioia's and Adriana's for sandwiches. Guido's and Anthonino's Taverna have good pizza. I'm smiling just thinking about all of this!

^You nailed it. If I'm eating lunch on the hill (which is often) I gotta hit up one of the small delis. Although not really Italian, I think Five Bistro is definitely worth a stop:

FIVE restaurant, a new american bistro on The Hill. 5100 Daggett Avenue, Saint Louis, MO 63103. Contact 314.773.5553

I'll second the suggestion for Lorenzo's Trattoria. We eat there about once a month. Great food, great atmosphere, and great service. Their house salad is wonderful with the pistachios, and I usually order the Tortellini.

Five and FarmHaus just won some epicurean award. I recommend both places.

Gioia's is fantastic. Not exactly healthy eating though.

For a good quick deli sandwich, try Southwest Market, located at Brannon and Southwest.
Lou Coccardi's is authentic Italian, and really tasty. And they have lunch specials. They're located at Magnolia and Southwest.
