St. Louis is quote prone to disasters? Oh CNBC ...

These lists are silly, but if they want to say (mostly) nice things about us then I won't look that gift horse in the mouth.

I'd say we may be somewhat prone to natural disasters. Flooding during the springs, Large scale storms during the summer, potentially with tornados, often with hail, and a major fault line fairly close. You add to that the historic buildings throughout the city that would sustain substantial damage in the event of a quake, and you could have some very serious potential natural disasters.

You're absolutely right, but i'm going to nit pic.....

Is New Madrid really a "major" fault line? Not to my knowledge

What percentage of the population is actually in the flood plain? Not much residential, mostly only industry now. Much of it protected by 500yr leves.

The tornados we get are rare and generally little 'micro bursts' local to a few homes. We NEVER get anything like those big ones you see on tv.

OMG I can't believe we are on this list. Is Jackson MS really a city? Same for Chatanooga. Indy should not be on this list. It is a fine city with some growth. Boring yes, but not a place to avoid. These lists don't help with the perception of stl by outsiders. Seriously, st louis does have a run down look to it.....better than it used to be but still run down. Maybe that is why Charlotte got the dems convention.

In addition to what Moorlander said, very few St. Louis city residents are in particular danger from major flooding -- those most prone to a flood are those who live on old farmland. And tornados are a scary thing, but so rarely do they affect the city itself -- they're just so scattered.

How is St. Louis prone to natural disasters AND highly walkable? The only "highly walkable" part is downtown st. louis and they NEVER get hit by ANY disasters.

Someone didn't do their research.

There are at least a half dozen neighborhoods outside of downtown I would easily consider to be very walkable and probbaly a dozen more I'd consider moderately so.

You don't think the Central West End is walkable??
