It seems that the main thrust of the OP's argument is that women are allowed to wear tank tops, while men are not. I agree that this policy doesn't make any sense and should be amended. However, in the grand scheme of things it's really not that big of an issue. Just chalk it up to a bad experience at one establishment.

Accepted. I'm sort of militant in my stance about things I consider rude. Most people probably would not have reacted like I did. I'm sure this had a hand in me not discerning the humor as well.

Simple solution. PR campaign to brand those wearing Sleeveless T's, Cargo Shorts and White sneakers w/white socks as dorks, dweebs and tourists. Problem solved. (this is how we identify mid western tourists out here in CA)

I can honestly say I don't think I've ever seen an adult male wear a tank top out in public -- I actually can't really think of what one would look like! So I will say that I think they're outside of what most Midwestern men wear.

That said, I like Trailhead better than Lewis and Clark's (owned by the same people), but both are mediocre, so they're hardly worth your time, and I doubt you'd have problems in the vast majority of casual places. Trailhead likes to think of itself as being rather upscale, but there are easily a dozen other casual places on North Main you could have gone where they wouldn't have said a word.

And FWIW, stlcitygirl your bear comment made me giggle.

I just picked up a tad of St. Louis culture here. New Mexico is very common to see males wearing tank tops in public, for that matter, New Jersey as well, in the summer of course.

I should add this caveat: I've never seen a mullet-less adult male wearing a tank top. And I think of those in the more wifebeater category -- the white ribbed things. Or I've seen like a basketball jersey, but that's not what we mean either right?

Seriously, what does a men's tank top look like? Maybe I've seen one and can't think of it off the top of my head. Where does one purchase such a thing? I thought maybe a place like Old Navy, but they have nothing like that on their Web site.
