I hate spiders as well, my basement was full of them when I lived in the city. Exterminator came on a regular basis and took care of the bulk of them. (you'll never be 100% spider free)
Now that we live in TX you should see some of the little friendlies who want to call my house their home. Field spider is the size of a small dinner plate, ugh. Again, good exterminators leave this not a large issue.
Now the scorpions on the other hand...............

We had a lot of brown recluses at my last apartment complex and management was super unhelpful because they refused to use any chemicals to exterminate (that's the flip side to living in a green community I suppose) and my dog actually got bit by one but she was fine -- she had a big gross spot for a long time, but the vet said it wouldn't get any worse, and it didn't.
Honestly that apartment was the first place I lived where I ever really saw any -- my point being, brown recluses are icky, but not a reason to go running for the hills.
I second calling up the landlord FWIW.
Oh and, yup, I totally read this thread's title initially as being about agoraphobics.

Got in touch with my landlord - someone is supposed to come out today and spray the baseboards. I'm not sure how much good that will do, but I'm hoping that if I just keep up with the vacuuming they will decide my apartment is not ideal.
I'd be fine with it if they would just stay in the building's laundry or boiler room, like they're *supposed* to.

I really do dislike eight legged bugs.

I think wolf spiders, which are very common in Missouri and are not poisonous, are often confused with brown recluse.
To the OP, I wouldn't worry about brown recluses. I don't mess with spiders when I see them, but I've lived here my whole life and have never had a problem and don't worry about them.
