Hi,

Good afternoon all,
My wife and i are looking to open up a french bakery in the kirkwood/ clayton area of St Louis.
I am french my self and my wife is american, from the St Louis area.
How do you feel it would be received within the region.
We have been looking and there doesn't seem to be much of any bakery doing this type of specialty goods.
We are very excited about the project but like all, its a big step and we want to be sure to be on the right spot.

Thank you very much.

J

I think you're likely targeting the right areas--Clayton might be a better bet just because of the number of businesses in the area, which might make for a good breakfast catering situation, if you're doing stuff like that. Rent is high in Clayton, though.

Clayton would be a good location for that--an upscale area with a lot of people with disposable income who would appreciate a French bakery.

Yes, I think if it is done correctly it could do well in either place. Macaurthur would give you strong competition in Kirkwood as a popular incumbent. On a similar note, I was driving up Skinker yesterday and on the northeast corner of Delmar & Skinker there is new place called Piccione Bakery (an "Italian bakery"), which looks very up-market. A big upgrade to the facade and (I presume) the interior of a long neglected storefront. Apparently it opens on April 23rd. So there are others in close by STL city bordering University City thinking similar thoughts....

New Italian Pastry Shop, Piccione, Opening April 23 in The Loop : Feast Magazine, St. Louis

The Post Dispatch had a nice article about a new French Pastry restaurant opening in Botanical Heights:

French pastry shop takes shape in Botanical Heights : Entertainment

There is definitely more room in the region for those type of shops- it really depends on how much overhead cost you're willing to take on. Clayton has a lot of potential for the business audience- but if you went into someplace like Lafayette Square / Soulard- those are parts of the city that have a french influence- so it may be received well.

Good luck! Keep us posted on what you decide.

McArthur's in downtown Kirkwood is popular with the locals there. You'd want to study them if considering there. They've been there many years and have multiple locations around St. Louis. I know Lake Forest Bakery was popular in Richmond Heights/Clayton berore closing seeral years ago. Price point would also matter. Imo, you would be able to have that higher in the more affluent area of Clayton. Rents would also be higher. Downtown Kirkwood rents are high and haw gone up a lot in recent years, with lots of turnover in businesses as a result. Many have moved North towards Manchester Rd or South towards Watson.
