Are there "rough" areas in Edwardsville?
We will be relocating to the St. Louis area in the next year or so with Wachovia. Based on what I've seen here and through some other research, we really like Edwardsville. I see lots of nice houses there...but it made me wonder...why are these really nice houses priced so cheaply? Are they in less desirable neighborhoods within Edwardsville? Are there any areas/streets that are known for crime? Just curious, thank you!

Hello Bell 12
I am interested in the reply that you will get. My husband and I are also a part of the Wachovia relocation, We also love Edwardsville (but not the taxes) it reminds us of Long Island, NY-from where we oringinally located with the Pu Securities relo.

Crazy about Edwardsville
Please check out my posts about Edwardsville. I've lived here since March of 2003. I have 2 kids in the Ed School district and can't say enough great things about it. Housing on the IL side is a little cheaper than MO side, but we do have higher taxes. It is a tradeoff. We have a wonderful hike and bike trail system, 2 YMCA facilities (one of which is new and FABULOUS), Southern Illinois University Ed, and lots of new restaurants and "box stores". Our downtown is quaint and active, and we have nice parks. I'm a native North Carolina gal - grew up in Charlotte and Hickory, and actually worked as a consultant to Wachovia in Winston back in the early nineties. I'd be happy to draw comparisons for you. Let me know what you want to know about "The Ed", and I'll be happy to fill you in!

I guess I'm just in shock that housing prices are so reasonable around St. Louis. Definitely makes our decision a bit easier

Home prices are reasonable, and Edwardsville is a great community. Wonderful place for a family and you don't have to mess with the 40 traffic mess! St. Louis is a fine city, and those of us on the IL side love all it has to offer. If you get a chance to do a househunting trip, be sure to drive over to Edwardsville. You will be pleasantly surprised. Good luck with the move and be sure to post any questions you have about Edwardsville/Glen Carbon area. I'll answer what I can.

The reasonable housing thing is so true. I lived my life thinking that million-dollar houses were mansions, but after leaving St. Louis and seeing how crazy housing can be in New York, Chicago, San Diego etc. I realized how good i had it as a kid. I lived in St. Peters, where our house was in a great neighborhood in a great school district, equidistant from 40 to 70, and close to everything and houses in our neighborhood usually sell for around $175,000.
Its nice that normal middle class Americans can actually attain home ownership in the St. Louis area without drowning in debt. Much of the US is not like that.
