Yes, there are some very dangerous areas in St. Louis, as there are in any major city, but you would never have occasion to go there. For a little insight into St. Louis crime stats check out this forum:

Look at the post on the first page by BTinSTL, it should shed some light on why St. Louis is often ranked very dangerous, when in fact its on par or better than other major American cities.

Yes, this is good info. The Crime Rates are misleading. It doesn't include St. Louis County which is very safe. And, much of the crime is confined to limited geogrpahies, where which you would never be spending your time as mentioned by others. You will do just fine in St. Louis coming from Philly, from an economic standpoint and safety standpoint. Philly is cheaper than much of that area of Mid-Atlantic to Northeast, however, St. Louis is cheaper than Philly.

Where you live depends more on your interests and current situation. That could be a variety of suggestions.

My husband works near Hazelwood and commutes from St. Peters every day. It is an easy commute, rarely any traffic, using 370. I would highly recommend St. Peters--Mid Rivers Mall is 5-10 minutes from our house as are hwy 70 and 370, there are several grocery stores to choose from along Mid Rivers Mall Drive plus Target and a variety of small stores and restaurants. I don't think you could go wrong.

As far as crime, I grew up in St. Charles, moved away in college and lived in several towns big and small. I recently moved to St. Peters and feel extremely safe. I'm not sure about taxes but check out the city's website:
St. Peters, Missouri: Home

Be sure to check out the RecPlex: residents get a discount and it's the nicest rec facility I've ever joined. They have an olympic-size pool, several ice skating rinks, workout facilities, a gym, track, etc., plus a variety of classes.

You can also request a relocation package from the chamber of commerce:
www.stpeterschamber.com

If you plan to live in St.Peters, living near Spencer Road and Mexico Road would give you convenient access to the RecPlex, mall, and hwy 370 (Spencer Road runs right into 370).

Some ideas are:
Brookmount Apts.
636-397-3990

Vanderbilt Apts
636-928-0064

I don't know how nice those apartment complexes are but it's a place to start.

Good luck!

Actually, I LIVE in Hazelwood. It is a safe area and I live in a nice neighborhood. I grew up in St. Charles and Hazelwood is no different than there (and it is only a few miles away). We have been tagged as one of the most dangerous cities because of our high population in condensed areas. Don't let that worry you. Just use common sense when you move here (be alert & aware of your surroundings, don't leave valuables in your car, etc). It is no different than the precautions you would use anywhere else.

No area in North St. Louis is considered safe. I would live in Clayton, its not far at all and lots of nice things to do.
