St. Louis' crime rate is high but there's little to no mention of gang activity or drug-related crimes, ever-it seems to be just random violence, and a lot of it. Am I right in this conclusion? Is this the case, and if so, why? If not, why don't we hear much mention of it, or am I just missing something?

I agree that the news does not really report of any crime being gang related. I'm always wondering this myself, particularly if there's any gang activity in south city.

There was a whole documentary a few years back called Ross Kemp: On Gangs in St. Louis. I think it inferred that St. Louis was one of the worst cities in the U.S for gang related crime :/

I imagine the news doesn't report whether it's gang-related because the police may not be 100% sure at the time of the incident and they doesn't want to make assumptions that are later exposed as wrong.

I always wondered if it was mostly confined to North City and East St. Louis...I read some news articles about major gang activity there at one point...but I've had the same question.

Gang-related is the norm rather than the exception, but St Louis gangs are often small and geographically fractured. They might be affiliated with bigger gangs, but most people would not recognize their names. In general, you can assume that a large chunk of the crimes that happen are gang related, but it is hard to know which gang or if the actual victims were part of a gang. So, the news just reports the crime and not any gang affiliation.
