Thanks for all the advice. I feel certain we can find something we like. I'm glad to hear the MetroLink is safe since that gives us more options without having to drive to the game and find parking spaces.

You know, I had never thought about it that way: Pay cheap for a decent hotel with airport shuttle to/from the airport. That same shuttle can drop you off near the metrolink, which you can take cheaply to downtown to the stadium. You get to avoid parking and higher priced downtown hotels due to the games. Also, for example, the Hilton Garden Inn at the Airport has complimentary shuttle, internet, etc all for only $80+/night. I believe there is free breakfast, too. Not sure how young your kids are, but they always love the trains. It's a fun experience for them.

A more "extreme" way to get a luxury hotel for free is to simply sign up for a Hyatt Credit Card which gives you 2 free nights at any Hyatt in the world (some people get this card so they can stay at the expensive 1-3k/night Hyatt Paris hotel, then cancel the card after the trip). The only catch is you have to spend $1000 on the card in 3 months---but this is easy if you can pay a month of your mortgage, car payment, groceries, etc since you're going to pay that money anyways. Each major hotel chain has cards like this that you can take advantage of (Hilton, Marriot, etc) and is a great way to take many vacations for free. If you did get the Hyatt or Hilton credit card, you could say a couple of nights for free at the nice Hyatts or Hiltons downtown (the cards also give you free breakfast and free internet).

Staying at the Hilton at the stadium for $100 night per Priceline bidding, but there is not a game the nights we're staying so I imagine that is why the lower price.

The only problem with that approach is that the city hotels are FULL on Cardinal weekends, especially if they are playing the Cubs. I used to work at one of the hotels in Westport and we would have to send guests with no reservations as far as Fenton as all closer places were sold out.

No smart hotel would sell of Priceline/Hotwire on nights that they would be sold out without it.

We are staying near the airport and planned on taking the Metrolink to downtown. I am wondering if this is safe now with what has happened in Ferguson. Should we plan on driving and finding somewhere to park?

What has happened in Ferguson has had absolutely no impact on the safety of Metrolink.

This, you'll be fine OP, just be sure to check out places near metro stops for fun as there's not a lot to do out by the airport.

Totally fine taking the metro. If you're going during game day, you're going to be traveling on the metro with thousands of other fans just like you. There is also highly visible metro security personnel at each stop.

The metrolink is the only way to go when going to a ball game also, if you don't want to stay in St. Louis now, cross the river into Illinois, you can grab the metrolink over there from the airport clear out to Belleville or beyond.

Look at google maps, it will show you the distance from Lambert to Ferguson to Busch Stadium and if I am not mistaken the metrolink goes in almost a straight line from Lambert out past Belleville, IL.
