He's a troll, but he has a point. You can't keep saying all of the crime is drug related north side activity.

I keep hearing crime overall is down, which may be true due to declining population, but we are seeing more violent crime downtown, CWE, south side than we used to.

This even:

Horse-Drawn Carriage Drivers Robbed in Downtown St. Louis « CBS St. Louis

North side drives the crime statistics, but crime is not limited to the North Side. And yes, it is out in the county big time, so this is not a county versus city rant.

As much as I would like to say St. Louis is safe, I can't. I don't believe it's as big of an issue our statistics says but it is an issue.

The horse drawn carriage issue is crazy and takes a bold criminal to commit such a crime.

Saying St. Louis is relatively unsafe is just plain ignorant. Crime happens, but crime happens everywhere, and it doesn't happen any more often in StL than anywhere else. And every day that somebody is robbed, a million other people in the same region weren't.

Not too bad, depends on what I'm drinking! You old enough to even do that yet? You never answered that question...

I've lived in St. Louis about a year now. I moved on a whim to follow my girlfriend after she was accepted to a graduate program at SLU. Our housing search lasted about three days and we found a place within reasonable distance and price. My neighborhood is probably predominantly African-American and would most likely be considered "sketch" to the county/suburban dwelling crowd. *lol*

As it turns out, I've not had a single problem. We have great neighbors with a block captain and people who care about what's happening in the neighborhood. I love my spot and couldn't even think of living anywhere else. I've been all over this great city, even venturing up north to photograph the Grand Avenue and Bissel Street water towers (didn't have a problem). I've been downtown at night, ridden the bus and MetroLink, and have generally gone where I've wanted. It's all about using common sense about where to be and when to be there. I've personally never felt unsafe, and based on the amount of people I see out on the daily living life, I'm guessing they don't either.

That said, the homicide rate is a real concern, and is something that should frustrate everyone. Taking into account the circumstances in which the homicides occur (gang and drug related, IMO), it shouldn't be seen as indictment of only St. Louis, but of the social-economic situations in a lot of cities across the country.

This just isn't true, even when you control for population declines.

-CWE-Midtown-DTW-DT violent crime is up 8.4% year to date, but last year's rates were freakishly low. This year's rates are lower than they have been in many years (with the exception of 2013). Keep in mind this is the one part of the city where population is growing, so the rates are actually likely to be lower today than they are using 4 year old population data.

-The southside including neighborhoods south of those 4 above all they way to Cherokee, and the river to Kingshighway: violent crime is down 11.6% from last year's already low YTD rate.

-Highest crime neighborhoods in other parts of S City: Gravois, Marine Villa, Patch, Carondelet, Dutchtown, Mt Pleasant. Violent crime down 12.9% from last year YTD.

-SW city neighborhoods: violent crime down almost 30% YTD from last year. Up in Northampton quite a bit though.

Rates are dropping.

The news said there have been 25 more shootings than there were last year at this time. That doesn't surprise me, someone gets shot every night in St.Louis but reading other city threads we are not alone.
I don't know the reason for the increase of shootings, a lot of these appear to be just target practice. We used to shoot at tin cans down by the river in the woods, folks today practice on people sitting on their porch or driving in their cars. Times sure have changed.

Personally, I recommend investing in a tinfoil hat. I never leave home without it and I always feel safe.

I'm sure its been commented on before. But the statistics are skewed by the fact that St Louis City is a relatively small area. St Louis has a crime rate of 825 per 100,000, which is higher than Chicago (500) and much higher than the national average (301).

However, when metropolitan areas are ranked, the following are found to have worse crime than the St Louis area: Atlanta, Philadelphia, Houston, Kansas City, Baltimore, Oklahoma City, Detroit, New Orleans, Nashville, Tucson, Columbus and others.
