Default Highway 64/40 closure

How has this affected everyone's commute? I don't live in St. Louis, so it hasn't bothered me.

I live near Forest Park and work at Washington U. so it hasn't really affected me personally; I'm lucky enough to be able to walk to work.

I did make a trip to the shopping area at Eager Rd. & I-40, which is were they are temporarily routing traffic (from south I-170 to I-40 eastbound, and vice versa) from the I-64/40 shutdown, and it was a little messy.

I've heard that the alternate have held up well so far; I've also heard that the first true test comes tomorrow (Monday)...of course, that could just be the media hyping things up as well.

One interesting note, I did see on two occasions last week that the Metro (St. Louis' light rail transport) did seem fuller than usual during the evening rush out of the city.

That's exactly what it is... They seemed so disappointed when it went better than they thought....

A similar story in Kansas City. MoDot closed the I-35 bridge into downtown for six months back in 2005. People knew about it months in advance (just like I-64 in StL.) and chose alternate routes and went about their lives. My office is on top of a hill within sight of that bridge and the first morning of the closure, the media was ALL OVER THE PLACE like it was the apocalypse. Helicopters, news vans, whole none yards. One one problem.... there was nothing to report. No backups for miles, no wrecks,.... nothing. They seemed so perplexed...

I've riden the metro to a Ram's game and back to Union Station and a Blues game. It really came in handy. And it's onlt $2 each way.

You really would have thought the apocalypse was coming with the way everyone was freaking out about the closure. When i was home for Christmas it was kind of hard not to laugh at you all because such a big deal out of it.

That's not to say that it's not a pain for everyone it affects - I just couldn't believe it was the top story every damn night.
