LauraMT is on a distinguished road
Default high schools, special ed, etc.

I'm considering a move from the western Chicago suburbs to St. Louis. I have a 16-year-old daughter interested in the arts, and a 13-year-old son with special education needs (mainstreamed in junior high with an aide).

What are my educational options for both? I'd prefer to live in the city but am being scared off by bad public school reps.

If you are looking at the city I would look into the charter/magnet schools. Many of them are very good 9some of the best in the state) and might well be good fits for your children considering they often have more specific curriculum than large suburban high schools.

I am a huge supporter of city living, but I wouldn't recommend even the best city magnet/charter schools for a kid with special education needs. The special education classes in the city are where they often "dump" the kids with the most behavioral problems. There are some private schools in the city (Catholic) that have programs for special education, so long as there isn't a violent behavior disorder.

If you are looking for an urban environment, then check out the suburbs of Clayton, Maplewood, Richmond Heights, and University City. They feel like part of the city and the schools are good. Kirkwood and Webster Groves are less urban but close to the city and also have good schools. Clayton, if you can afford it, probably has the best school system for both arts and special education. Also, if you live in many of the suburbs mentioned, you can apply for your daughter to attend one of the city magnet schools. The best public high school in the state, Metro, is located in the city. There is also a high school for the arts.

Good luck!
