Southern or Midwestern?
Would you consider St. Louis to be Southern, Midwestern, or both?

Uh oh. Hey ajf131, call your office and have at it! All kidding aside, I would characterize the St. Louis area as Midwestern, with a small dash of Southern especially as you head toward High Ridge and House Springs, and maybe Pevely and Herculaneum as you head down I-55 (but I'm not as familiar with the I-55 corridor).
I have to tell the OP, we went around and around at at least 4,000 rpm in the "Missouri--Southern or Midwestern" forum over in the main Missouri forums. You might have to go back a few pages to find it, but there's some pretttyyyy lively and interesting debate that took place. I just kept a low profile and sat in the upper row of the terrace reserved section of this debate arena as a spectator for the most part.
When I grew up there in North County until 1986, I never did that much in the way of traveling, and just felt that part of the St. Louis area was down-the-line Midwest.

Uh oh. That first southern/midwestern thread was bad enough. Prepare for a certain poster to get panties in a bind any minute now. Just asking for trouble.
I personally would consider St.Louis to be midwestern sadly and I avoid that city like the plague.

Hey you guys, let's go easy on ajf131 and give him a decent chance. It's a good question for debate (and you'll find it down on page 3 of the MO state forums as I write this). But even by his own admission, we just beat this topic into a totally mushy pulp after a bit. What were there, something like over three hundred separate posts in that one thread alone. Something, huh?

I hadn't realized it had been asked before. I speaking about St. Louis, though, not the entire state. Hopefully this doesn't turn ugly. Personally, I kind of consider St. Louis to be both.

Sorry, hope it doesn't turn into what the other did. I'm just going to stay out of this one as long as I can. STL isn't my stomping grounds.

St. Louis is a River City. It has more in common with Louisville, Cincinnati, or Pittsburgh than either the Midwest or South.
All three are cities confused about south/north, or in Pittsburgh's case midwest or east coast. But they don't fit any of the categories very well, except with each other. They are old cities founded and based on river commerce that grew to become industrial powerhouses and now seek new identity because of the death of American industry

Midwestern, without a doubt, and there is no way anybody could bind me into my panties over that, number one because I'm male and don't wear panties, number two because I've lived in this area my whole life and know that its history is undoubtedly that of a Midwestern city (Industry and economy, accent, ultimately pro-Union, gained in population from the Great Migration, demographically Midwestern, climate more Midwestern), and number three because someone from a nearby county bordering the St. Louis metro area on here obviously has an agenda to try and make a fool out of me, as well as put down my city and insult me for being Midwestern. At least I give facts and solid evidence supporting my information and don't go making outrageous claims that because I lean more towards a certain culture that's the way everyone leans, like this person does. River cities aren't linked by culture typically either. I've been to all the aforementioned cities except Pittsburgh and have relatives in Cleveland, and friends in Chicago and Detroit and the Twin Cities. St. Louis is undoubtedly much more like those cities than any city from any other region. Those of you who want to make wisecrack remarks about me, just stop and grow up. This is a forum for adults, not little kids out to make remarks to get other users riled up. Just act your age. I'm not even going to bother posting in this thread for awhile since so many people seem eager to blast me at every opportunity. You all have fun talking about me behind my back like you're a middle-school cliche. Goodbye.
