It's about 3 hours for me to get to STL. We go to Blues and Cardinals games occasionally.

Favorite: the general feeling of optimism in the city right now. It's been missing for a long time.
Least favorite: (I hope this doesn't come across as incendiary) Many people in St. Louis that I have come across (even my own family) can be racist and elitest. I'm not saying that doesn't happen everywhere, but I do notice it when I'm home.

About 18 to 20 hours for me, lifelong New Englander. But I do get to make occasional trips there.

Of course the Blues, Cards and Rams but...
My favorite thing about Saint Louis is the history, as the Gateway all the explorers, mountain men, trappers, etc passed thru Saint Louis. Men like James Clyman, Jedediah Smith, Hugh Glass, Jim Bridger, etc were here! Daniel Boone spent his last days not to far away, Lewis & Clark outfitted here for their trek. It goes on and on.
Saint Louis street names like Sublette, for William Sublette, Chouteau for Pierre Chouteau (there are lots more) link Saint Louis to one of the greatest eras in Amerincan history...that's what I like!

Good answer! I didn't appreciate that as a kid, but moving back...I love all the historical sites and places to see.
I can't choose just ONE thing about the area (and I say that, because alot of my favorite, younger memories have to do with the Alton area where I lived until I was 10---the Piasa bird, great river road and several favorite places to eat over there (actually meeting a childhood friend at the Moonlight tonight...haven't been there in over 20 years!) but St. Louis was always magical to me. Crossing the bridge and seeing the Arch--it still gives me a happy feeling. Stayed a die-hard Cards fan no matter how many years we were away so I'm really enjoying trying to turn our son into one.
Love the 'family' atmosphere of the city. SO many things to do with kids. The Zoo, Science Place, City Museum, Grant's Farm. Can't name just one!
And we've been back such a short period of time, I can't think of much negative yet! I could say all the road construction, but even that isn't a drop in the bucket compared to driving in Dallas for 15 years. YUCK!!!!

Favorite: Forest Park, Architecture, Joe Edwards, Soulard, South City, U. City, current optimism, athletic civic pride, Grant's Farm, Magic House, Frank Viverito, to name a few
Least Favorite: Inability of local leaders to accomplish anything in a timely manner, and also the inability to market the city in better and more creative ways.
2) Lack of racial and ethnic diversity and integration beyond black and white.
3) Public transportation(in various forms) isn't what I'd like it to be.
4) Smoking is still allowed in too many places.
to name a few.

What's your favorite thing about St. Louis?
My relatives being there! All the wonderful childhood memories of visits there as I grew up, plus the continued fun we still have anytime we're together in STL today To my mind, St. Louis = good times!
What's your least favorite?
Suburban sprawl. It's not as bad as other places (like here in Columbus ), but large swathes of beautiful West county have succumbed in the past 10-20 yrs.

faves so far...
Hi. We just moved here but I already have likes and dislikes. We are renting right now and trying to decide between buying a house here on in IL. We'll be here for three years while my husband works at Scott Airforce Base.
Likes: Neighborhood bars in the Southampton neighborhood where we currently live. Very nice people (we just came from CA), good food (had a great meal at LoRusso's last night), inexpensive baby sitters, inexpensive gas prices, inexpensive real estate tax. Again, we're coming from CA! The parks! I've also heard the zoo and other areas are great for kids and we have a two year old.
Dislikes: Smoking in public. UGH! No recyling!!!????!!! Personal property tax. Public transportation (Metrolink to be specific...needs to be expanded). No really close by Trader Joes or Chick Fil A, but we can drive to them.
Overall, though, we're happy here and like our neighborhood. We're looking forward to warmer weather, a Cardinals game and hanging out with the locals.
