We are a married couple with three school aged children moving to area from out of state. Need to live near Clayton and remain in a good school district. Have always been home owners, but want to rent for at least a year until we choose where to buy. Looking for 3 bdr. 2 bath under $1100 / month. Is this unrealistic? Any opinions on the University City for families? Appreciate feedback from those living in and around Clayton. Thanks!

That's not a very realistic budget for what you're looking for. It's not impossible to find a place within your budget, but it's either not going to be a nice neighborhood, or it's not going to be well-kept... or both.

U-City, south of Delmar Blvd. is okay, but I wouldn't go too far north of it. There are many other communities that are probably more ideal for families, but there is nothing inherently wrong with U-City.

why near clayton? And $1,100 is a good school district, close to clayton and a good area for a 3/2 is going to be rather difficult. A friend's 3/2 in Brentwood just went for $1,800 with over 25 applicants.

You'll most likely need to give up on something or go further out

You'll have to define "near" Clayton, MO for us to be helpful. You're budget is going to allow you to be IN Clayton...and you'll be hard pressed to find something very near Delmar for that price either.

It'd also be helpful to define what you consider a "good" school district. I think U-City district is acceptable...but it's not fantastic by any stretch...You'll be looking South or West for better districts, with Clayton and Ladue being highly regarded...same is true for Parkway or Kirkwood...you'll have the best luck in your budget in parts of Parkway North.

3 br, 2 bath in University City (where the schools are not terrible, but not great) for under $1100 -- check out Williamsburg Square townhomes on Ahern Court (just off Hanley, a little bit south of Olive). We rented there for 5 years (with a newborn-turned-preschooler), and it was pretty nice. Safe neighborhood, friendly property manager, attentive maintenance.

(Also, you're very wise to rent for at least a year before you buy. It'll take you that long to figure out the ridiculous number of school districts around here...)
