As I think everyone knows, the Ozarks begin in South County/West County/Southwest County. I just hiked Castlewood for the first time the other day and was wondering if there were other state parks like Castlewood in the St. Louis metro area? Let me know.

State parks specifically? Only a few. Castlewood is a gem, but gets very crowded. Babler State Park has trails that are quieter. Pere Marquette State Park in Ilinois is also very hilly and scenic, and probably has the best overlooks in StL.

You'll find more options with local/regional parks. Weldon Spring, Rockwoods Reservation, Rockwoods Range, and West Tyson county park offer decent hikes within 30 minutes of the city.

I've hiked them all. Pere Marquette was the most impressive.

This is one thing I will miss when we move closer in. Far west county has some great spots.

Babler is definitely quieter and I like it. It doesn't have quite the breathtaking view at Castlewood

Rockwoods reservation is nice

Area Summary

Greensfelder is a pretty county park

Greensfelder

And a bit of a drive, but this was where my parents always took us as kids.

And Pere Marquette is awesome too

Try Hawn State Park in St. Gen.

My personal favorite is Taum Sauk Mountain State Park

Another gem is Johnson Shut-ins State Park

I know these 3 are a little further, they are still close enough to drive, enjoy a long day and get back to the City in at a reasonable hour. IMO, Taum Sauk, Elephant Rocks & Johnson Shut-ins on the 3 best State Parks in MO. BTW, the highest point in MO. is in Taum Sauk.

In addition to the other places mentioned, I would add the following:

Quiver River State Park near Troy Missouri. This is just outside the metro, but great place:

Meramec state park about 60 miles out:

Route 66 state park is in the area near Eureka:

I will second Meramec State Park. I can be there in one hour from south county.
