It kind of looks like a gated community, if that's the case, it's a huge gated neighborhood.
Is there a history of how that place came out to be that way?
This is the only picture where you can see a little how the neighborhood looks like

the neighborhood is techinically enclosed by an iron gate i believe, but im not sure if i would call it a gated community, since anyone can clearly go in and out.

yes a lot of the wealthy black families from the Ville have set up shop in Pasadena, but it is still integrated and stable with about 30-35% white population.

A lot of places could probably learn some lessons from Pasadena Hills. Like I said, I've never been, though the pics are lovely. It's certainly on my list of places to visit.

Bel-Nor is another beautiful community nearby with great housing stock and also integrated and stable about 60% white, 40% black. here is a great photo thread of that community
Urban St. Louis - View topic - Photography > Bel-Nor, Jewel of Normandy Area
The entire Normandy area of Pasadena Hills, Pasadena Park, Bellerive Acres, Bel-Nor, Glen Echo Park, Greendale, and the City of Normandy are all beautiful in my opinion and affordable! i seriously think this area is ready for a rebound in its commerical districts.
Just think about it UMSL, Northpark, country clubs like Norwood and Glen Echo and historic course of Normandie, Express Scripts, Natural Bridge Loop (hopefully), great historic beautiful well built mostly brick housing, near metro link, near the highways, this area is ready to take off again.
some photos of Glen Echo Park

and oh aragx heres the website for Pasadena Hills "The Best Kept Secret in St. Louis" Home Page if you want more info.

there are some neighborhoods over by the Botanical gardens that used to be like this one, totally private gated neighborhoods, I have not been there in about 20 years, I thought they were just beautiful. Is anyone familar with what I am talking about? Are they still there?

Pasadena Hills is a cool little enclave! I've sold some homes in there and while the bigger ones can get a bit pricey...at least on a relative scale.....there are smaller homes that don't actually cost that much! If something does happened with the commercial development along Natural Bridge, this area could boom!
I don't really have a favorite because it would all hinge on what I could afford, but some of the neighborhoods in the city and in Clayton are pretty freaking cool! I would love one of those shacks off of Wydown, near Wash U! ;-)
For "off the beaten track" how about Ellsah IL?

Lived in Pasadena Hills for 7 years. This a GREAT community. Very accessible to the airport. I-70 is close for access to downtown. Pasadena is a limited access (partially gated) community. Would definitely buy there again if we move back to St. Louis.
