There are some new developments near downtown St. Charles - one is called Frenchtown Lofts. They're closer to some of the action.

Or if you end up liking New Town, there's another similar development nearby called Charlestowne.

With a budget of 250 you can certainly get into a SFH if you'd like to; it really depends on your preference.

I would recommend the Boulders at Katy Trail. They are nice, newer condos with great amenities, easily accessible to the city and St. Charles County (at Page/364 and Arena Parkway). Only a short drive to Main Street. My husband and I seriously considered moving there but opted for a house w/yard since we have young children and pets. However, there are many singles there.
Katy Trail Prototype

Good luck!

One more thing--don't discount New Town. I think you'll either like it or hate it. That seems to be the response of most of our friends. You don't have to go through an undesirable part of town to access it and that area is also close to Main Street and the highway. It is more family-oriented and pricey. However, they have many great planned events throughout the year (movie nights at the amphitheater, festivals, etc.). And we usually see quite a bit of outdoor activity when we visit on nice days.

I agree- don't discount New Town until you see it yourself. My major worry with the place is this: There are a lot of homes on the market there- far more than other areas. It's a new idea and if it works out there's money to be made by all; if it fails everyone loses money.

Lisamarie- I guess our definition of close to Main Street is different. i don't know that you could argue that it's built in a very undeveloped area.

OMG me too! Actually it's the concept of "new urbanism" that I have the biggest problem with. It's like the city right? Except without the diversity (both racial and economic). it's a way for suburbanites to feel like they live in a "city" without investing in the beautiful city we already have.

I think it's a little creepy myself. At first I liked the idea but then thinking about the limits places on residents made me rethink it. I probably will go see it first hand though, to eliminate it.

Good luck with everything. keep us posted, and if there's any other questions you have, feel free to ask. If I don't know the answer I guarantee I can find it out for you. My mom has lived in St. Peters for 23 years and seen the area go though many changes.

Photobuff: Aragx6 hits it right on the button! New Town, at least to me, seems a bit contrived! A bit too "measured" for me..., but it is new and nice and all....I absolutely LOVE the older part of St. Charles though...it has a small town feel to it, the housing stock is wonderful.

I can't wait to see that part. I majored in history in college and can't wait to see the architecture of the older areas.
