When I look at houses similar to mine in Kirkwood, Webster, or University City (the areas with the most comparable housing stock), they are always much more expensive, sometimes by over $200,000, and also have much larger tax bills. You can get a lot more house for the money in the city if you are looking at the historic brick homes. By the time I pay the earnings tax on top of the real estate tax, I am still way ahead by living in the city.
The only way it turns into a loss for me to live in the city is the fact that the public school options are not very good. Since I would probably choose a private school for my children no matter where I lived, it isn't a big deal.
