For all who passed your driver's ed tests: What is the law about pedestrian crosswalks that you come upon in public streets? What are drivers required to do - if anything"? And, does that law also apply on private streets? Thanks.

OK, Seriously? You should know from LONG before you were in drivers ed you stop for people in crosswalks, it's not rocket science or some big secret. A crosswalk is a crosswalk being on a private street doesn't change that and yes

I simply want to know what the law is in St Louis about crossing pedestrian crosswalks, especially when there is a pedestrian trying to cross the street on such.

Pedestrians always have the right of way...when in doubt stop and let them cross.

Thank you. I have always heard that but wondered if it was actual written law.

Missouri driver manual:

Quote:
CROSSWALKS AND STOP LINES
When required to stop because of a sign or signal, you must stop before
your vehicle reaches the stop line or, if there is one, the crosswalk.
Crosswalks define the area where pedestrians are to cross the roadway.
You must yield to pedestrians in or about to enter a crosswalk. Not
all crosswalks are marked. Be alert for pedestrians when crossing
intersections that do not have defined crosswalks.

Thank you, Frank Miller. I do appreciate that. So, if there is a sign, they must stop. If there is no sign, they still must stop if there is a pedestrian. Got it.

Even if it wasn't a written law, wouldn't you still stop for pedestrians? What's the alternative, mow them down and be charged with vehicular manslaughter?

Considering that I am the pedestrian???? I was standing in the middle of the street in the crosswalk with cars zooming past me one after another. No one stopped for a long while. Finally, one did stop and I got the rest of the way across. Wouldn't you be asking what the law is?

The cars should always stop for you at cross walks. I have found St. Louis drivers pretty polite, when I visited. In Chicago they would mow you down. Sorry you had the experience...totally uncalled for.
