Well, my family and I are new to the St. Louis area, we just moved here from Cleveland and, while we're not fans of the hot and oppressive summer weather, we love everything else and it's affordability.

We just purchased a home at a steal from an economically challenged couple laid off from ABInBev (nice people, he worked there for 27 years, you could see the sadness in his eyes as they will be relocating to Detroit for his next job), in the St. Louis Hills area. Of course coming from Cleveland even the nicest areas in St. Louis look a bit "rough," but we plan on being progressively involved in our wonderful local community and making the area a better place! We will help get St. Louis City neighborhoods turned around!!!

I would have guessed, given the housing price trends, that desirable sections of St. Louis would compare somewhat favorably with Cleveland. University Heights and Shaker Heights are kind of like Skinker Debalivier and University City, right? The Central West End is maybe kind of like Lakewood?

I am not super familiar with the nuances of Cleveland neighborhoods, but I have always wanted to give it a closer look. Much of the east side seems to have evolved in the same way north st. Louis has - poverty has started stretching out into East Cleveland and Euclid in the same was it happened in places like Riverview and Spanish Lake.

Either way, sorry to hijack and perfectly goofy thread for a city-vs-city comparison, but welcome to St. Louis! I lived there 12 years and I rather enjoyed it. St. Louis Hills is a very nice area.

There must be hipster coffee shops in low income, predominantly black areas.

Off the top of my head, Woodlawn, Chicago, has two (Green Line Coffee and Robust Coffee), and that's a very rough area. Also Englewood, Chicago, has Kusayana Coffee, and that's one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the country.

Typically aren't a lot of amenities in rough areas other than dollar stores, corner store/bodegas, and churches. That's why when Magic Johnson opened those Starbucks in black neighborhoods it was such a big deal.
