Yesterday was my daughter’s first Halloween since moving to St. Charles. She only had 10 trick or treaters, but she said the tradition is for the kids to tell a joke in return for their treat.
Is this just a neighborhood thing, or common in MO?

It’s a cute idea.

It is, as far as I can tell, peculiar to St. Louis and Des Moines in North America (possibly Irish in origin). Even the Illinois side of the area doesn't seem to do it much; I was in Columbia and didn't hear a single joke, and my Belleville wife had never heard of the concept.

We just moved to St. Charles this past summer and yes we had a few goblins tell us jokes. It was very cute.

I don't know about the state as a whole, but it's definitely a thing in STL.
