I hate that Northwest Plaza is gone now.
My mom and I would go there once a week until we moved out of STL in 72, we still went shopping there until 79, when my dad passed and my mom moved to Poplar Bluff.
I went once after it was turned into an indoor mall, I had no idea where anything was, very strange considering I knew that place like the back of my hand before it was converted.

^And of course the irony is that everyone wants outdoor malls now. Except that they call them "Lifestyle Centers" whatever the hell that's supposed to mean.

There are several things that come to mind when I think of South St. Louis in the 70's of course 905 liquor stores, velvet freeze being able go cruse a Stake n Shake or a city park at night! Walking down South Grand and feeling safe, and who could forget "bucket man Joe" beebopp'in down Morganford listening to his broken radio and carrying his 5 gallon bucket with (what else) 905 beers in it.

As a kid growing up in the 70's I watched WAAAAY too much TV. So over 30 years later I often suffer from earworms of that era. So I'll spread the infection:

"Don't baste your bar-b-cue. Mall it! Mall it! 5 fantastic flavors.... Mall it!"
"Summer's great. Summer's fun. Especially if you're the lucky one. Lucky enough to own a family pool from Pool Mart... Pool Mart pools are fun!"

Barbara,
thanks for a great walk through my old neighborhood in the greatest period of time ever.

Our neighborhoods intersected as mine was at the Jefferson and Gravois area. Lived on Texas and attended Charless Grade School and experienced all the memories you so well brought forth.

How about the Softball Park where the men and women semi pro teams played doubleheaders .
The sled races down the hills onto the frozen lake at Benton Park.
My mom had a confectionery on the corner of McNair and Lemp and another on 18th with pin ball machine with Pepsi and peanuts.
Lunch-meat for hobo sandwiches 10 cents for bologna and cheese with mustard or mayo.Lums potato chips 3 cents bag.

Thanks again for the walk through the St Louis we all loved.

BobBull in StL40/56

I remember the velvet freeze in Kirkwood and of course 905 liquor stores my parents frequented for their cocktail supplies.

This thread makes me a) sad that I didn't grow up in the city and b) very excited that my kids will.

My memories of St. Peters are lovely but not nearly as diverse or interesting

Getting to spend the first decade of my life in S STL AND St Chuck during the 60s was pretty cool, I am old enough to remember when they started to renovate Old Town, my parents were really excited about that.
