I am 28 and plan on continuing my education when I separate from the military later this year. I was recently accepted to Saint Louis University, honestly I applied on a whim. I've only visited St. Louis 3 times many years ago, but I enjoyed the eccentric youthful vibe I got from walking around various places. If I was to attend school in St. Louis and live in the city itself, would the job prospects, quality of life, and safety be conducive to making it a permanent home?

Yes. St. Louis looks much worse on paper than what it actually is when it comes to crime. Many find St. Louis offers a lot of city for the money so there is a good quality of life. Your job prospects usually depend on your field. There is a low unemployment rate for the metro area and not every one is chasing the same dream or opportunity but I am still finding a lot of WashU and SLU graduates heading to the larger east coast cities and Chicago to start their lives after graduation.

Every single person I know that went to SLU loved it, even people that thought they would want to get out of town after high school. They loved the area and what's great about St. Louis is that there are so many areas to go out in. Whether it's around SLU, Central West End, Cherokee St, Downtown, the Grove, South Grand and Soulard. The cost of living here is also extremely inexpensive when compared to other cities. The area around SLU continues to be redeveloped and is growing rapidly. St. Louis is also a top ten city for college grads.

I'm a SLU grad that didn't grow up in the area; I only visited once before deciding--absolutely loved it, St Louis can kind of suck you in (I ended up leaving 2 years after graduation to try something different, and ended up moving back). I found the intern/job opportunities were abundant when I was in college. I felt I was able to make a lot more professional connections going to a school in the city vs. a college town.

I moved from NYC and am in my late 20s -- I think STL is a city with a very good size for a young person. Small enough that things are "easy" and affordable, but large enough that there is actually stuff to do (decent music and restaurant scene, good bars, festivals and events, etc)
