High stress jobs has sent many Genx and older into entrepreneurship. Choosing St. Louis is a fantastic decision because of the cost of living and many options by being in the center of the country. Most importantly is not everyone is chasing the same buck.

Cost of living is a factor. I've looked into moving to Atlanta (which is closer to my extended family) but it's just to expensive and traffic is really horrible. Plus I'm just more familiar with STL. Still follow the Cards and would love some pro sports action as well.

OP:I don't have anything valuable to add as you've already received some wonderful info.

I just wanted to wish you all the best! I hope you do decide to move here- and love St. Louis for what it is. It is still a bit "rough around the edges", but it truly is a gem of a place, and seems to be continually improving!

St. Louis is relatively compact and walkable. Although I'm too rural-minded to live in the downtown area I'm kinda encouraged about what I'm reading. My father-in-law lived downtown for about 15 years back in the late 1990s and enjoyed it then. He was made for urban living and didn't mind that services were a little sparse. He had his favorite places and a number of buddies that hung out with. He would walk most places and use public transportation (he was once a bus driver) and use a taxi to bring home his groceries. He had a car but didn't use it except to venture out into the hinterland or for road trips. It sounds like things have gotten much better in the intervening years but he was happy even back then.

I retired early at 52 to escape some of the pressure and job stress. I began working part-time for my city government (and could have worked full-time) and I enjoyed the work better than the last few years of my career job. Good luck with your move.

Very cool. This sounds much like my situation since I'm 52. I would just like to find something part time to supplement some money I have in savings. I have no bills other than rent or mortgage. My car is paid for and only 47,000 miles. I just want to pull back and lay really low for a while. Part time for 1-2 years, then full time if that's where my life leads and then back to retirement around 65.

Like I said in my original post, I just want to do this in a different place, preferably a good downtown or near downtown scene. Time to move on from my current local.
