Default 1st time Visit - Possible Relocation

I just got word that I may be moving to STL this fall. I've read most of the relocation threads, but my question is a little different.

I want to make the most of my house hunting trip (1st time visit). I am looking to move into a 1bdr apartment thinking about possibly a loft. I don't want to waste my trip randomly visiting a bunch of neighborhoods that look good online.

I am a christian, 30 something, single (nvr married) w/ no kids. I have lived in Detroit, so although I don't want to be a victim, I'm not afraid to come to STL I've also lived in the south as well. I'm well rounded and would like to live around professions with a diverse racial make-up. Im in a marathon walking club so I would like to move to a place that I could keep walking if possible (If not, are there any places I could drive to and then walk ~ smile)

If I were YOUR favorite sister, where would you direct me to start looking? Beyond apartment hunting, what places should I definitely visit to help me make up my mind about moving there?

The neighborhoods I personally would suggest for you (as well as myself!) would be the Central West End, Tower Grove South or East and the Downtown Washington Ave. loft District.

If you like having access to the light rail do CWE or downtown.

For a list of some great St. Louis activities check out this thread: Must see St. Louis attractions.

I second the CWE or downtown.

Either place, you are going to be close to Forest Park (as we always like to boast, bigger than Central Park ). Downtown you're going to get the loft you are looking for, but its not all that racially diverse yet..right now it is mostly white.

I'd start here as well and throw in a couple more if these didn't work out for you, such as the Soulard and Lafayette Square. Certain parts of U. City I'd recommend as well, but it is a bohemian area, with a lot of diversity on it's Southern end, not far from Forest Park for your walking, and I know several happy residents there.

Any of the above mentioned is where I'd start.
