You really should invest in a map. Tower Grove, and some of the best developed blocks of South Grand are all 6 blocks North of Utah St., Hello!! It is a fun neighborhood and within the area i recommended.

No map needed here! You recommended that no one look south of Utah OR east of Kingshighway. Under the proper reading of that phrase, those are two separate and distinct recommendations and anything east of Kingshighway is not recommended, irrespective of its location north or south of Utah Street. Most people reading that recommendation are going to notice that Tower Grove, the Central West End, Soulard, and Compton Heights are east of Kingshighway. The way that you wrote your recommendation excludes those areas. That is why your post is confusing, especially to those not familiar with St. Louis.
Remember, saying that no one should look south of Utah AND east of Kingshighway is not the same as saying no one should look south of Utah OR east of Kingshighway. I believe that you intended to use the "and" and not the "or" after reading your replies.

welcome to st.louis
as you can see...people here get a little touchy about what is a "good neighborhood". don't know where you are in your planning but here are a few thoughts. can't go wrong with clayton area..fairly safe and forest park...st.louis hills area has 2 great parks for running/dog walking..houses and yards not huge but pretty nice ...can be a little pricey but that is relative. i have never been a fan of the metro link...alot of un-reported crime on and near stops...radio talk shows and word of mouth from some of my cop friends so be careful when you ride and where you get on and off.
racism???well everybody has their own definition now...if your asking if st.louis is segregated...i'd say for the most part..yes. but it is by choice...st.louis people by their nature are more likely to group together because of shared ideas/identities...that's why we have the german side of the city...the italian side....the bosnian side etc....it's not really white vs black but it looks that way to outsiders.someone talked of being from the east coast and not being accepted and/or mis-treated...i find that hard to believe unless they were really unlucky who they moved next to or that neighborhood...i know some east coast people and well...sometimes they rub people the wrong way with their personalities...mainly kind of a "know it all " demeanor.guys know how to handle this with other guys but women have problems with this kind of personality...my wife gave me her input on this thought of mine so don't throw anything at the monitor
as far as mountains and nature are concerned....you are close to the ozarks and south/southwest parts of missouri are great for hiking and camping...good luck and welcome to st.louis

Of course, I'll have to kindly disagree with you there . I love it and use it every day. Now, granted I use the Shrewsbury line 95% of the time, which runs mainly through Forest Park, U City, Clayton, and Maplewood ... but I've never had any bad experiences when using all stops downtown or any stops the few times I've used the Lambert line. The only "rough" stop that I've heard of by word of mouth is the Grand stop, but I've never used it - so I can't really comment from personal experience.

I'm sorry, but the use of hoosier has no modern-day derogatory nature towards easterners, whatever you might seem to believe. In fact, we far more often call other Missourians hoosiers than anyone from "the east." Like folks down in the bootheel (who are more southern)
Had to explain this to a friend from Indiana once; she thought it was very funny, but that's just the English language. Words mean different things in different regions or countries. When the Brits call a cigarette a three letter word that starts with f and rhymes with rag, they're not secretly making derogatory comments about homosexuals, the word just evolved differently here and there.

The term "Hoosier" in St. Louis when spoken away from the many local IU grads or ex state of Indiana people, is a local term, often used in jest to describe fellow St. Louisans, not even other parts of the state.
It is a term that would be the equaivalent of Redneck somewhere else. Much of the time it is not used in a mean-spirited way, although it can be. Many St. Louisans do not use the more nationally popular terms of Redneck etc...
It's rather childish all the way around imo.

St. Loser?
It's interesting to me that you accuse the natives of being hostile, and yet you chose to represent yourself with a screen name that the natives might consider insulting. Just an observation.

For your information i live in South County and have very nice neighbors and am happy with my location at present. I work 2 miles from where i live. It took me 2 years to find a decent place to live. My suggestions before, are for someone working at Barnes-Jewish. I previously lived in the Holly Hills area and nobody would have ever known this by a drive-thru look at the area, but crime is on a serious upswing there. It is why i moved out, and it seems to be not well known unless you are really local, and up-to-date.
Please look at a map. I draw a line at Utah St. to exclude anything South of there. Therefore the CWE is desirable. The Hill is West of Kingshighway. Dogtown is West of The Hill.
I think you are trying to be confusing. I was trying to be helpful.
When you mention Soulard you failed to notice i said there were pockets that are decent. Soulard would be *possibly* ok, but it would not even be my third choice. Why suggest something Iffy? Suggest what you think is best. It is my opinion that the only reason to live in South County (or South City) is if you WORK there or have FAMILY there and like it. If you are new to the area completely, i do not think it is the most fun or welcoming place.
Not everyone has a nice warm welcome in this fine city. Not everyone comes here with a family safety net.
There is a definite difference in attitude between urban professionals and suburban professionals. I would recommend living around the former, to anyone who is new to the city. Less haughty, less judgemental.
You have totally discounted everything i had to say. Gee, that's awfully NICE of you.

I'm going to be hostile for a sec. You did not have to quote the entire LONG post, just to respond to his name.
