All of it is "okay", but typically I'd say directly east of the park is the safest and has the most action. As for apartment complexes, I'd try to get as close to Euclid as possible, or maybe like a block or two east of Euclid on Maryland, Lindell, West Pine, or Laclede. Many to chose from, and you can get what you want for $850 (assuming a one bedroom). We pay $700 for a one bedroom on Euclid.

CWE is a very safe place. As long as you stay south of Delmar you will be file.

Yes, the negative is that the CWE is extremely expensive. Ever think about Old North? My neighbor across the street is putting the finishing touches on an apartment that would be very convenient to I-70.

I don't know if CWE is extremely expensive, moreso than Old North, but not as expensive probably as Clayton.

Old North does have some beautiful homes as well, and it's beginning its resurgence.
