Default North St Louis

While reading this forum, I see that North St Louis is considered to be a high crime area. My question is where does North STL start, ie, what E-W street would be considered the dividing line?

There's a map here. North St. Louis is seeing rejuvination, with likely more to come. As of right now it is probably the most dangerous part of St. Louis City, with a few exceptions. North St. Louis, I believe, is on the way to rebirth, but it's just getting started.

Built St. Louis: The North Side | Tour map
Built St. Louis: The North Side | Old North St. Louis - street map

The Map. And tour. The tour is a few years old, but unfortunately, probably not a lot has changed in 2-3 years (other than 14th Street Mall).

North St. Louis is seeing the 14th Street Mall (Crown Square) project, which is rehabbing store fronts and homes. Some blocks of North St. Louis are very empty, with only a couple houses left on a block. But some areas are still fairly dense.

North St. Louis is on the rise again, slowly but surely. I don't think it's quite the hell some suspect it is. But yes, it is generally the high-crime area of St. Louis City. And I wouldn't go there at night alone, especially if I didn't know where I was going. As with any part of the city, you need to be smart.

Generally, the dividing line between North City and Central/South City is Delmar Street.

Delmar isn't a magic line which divides the high crime areas from the low crime areas, though. There are some areas north of Delmar that are very safe, and some areas south of Delmar that are very dangerous.

Default Thanks for the info

Thanks, everyone, for the info and links. I'm thinking of moving to STL at some point and have been intrigued by some of the cheap real estate in the city. The crime ratings on the City-Data site seem daunting, but then I discovered that they are almost the same as the neighborhood I live in in Texas!

I think it is important to note that "North St. Louis" is not some large, monolithic entity. It is broken up by neighborhoods, and some are safer than others. Old North St. Louis is seeing an amazing rebirth and tons of investment from outside sources. Hyde Park is also seeing some renovation, but generally it is moving a bit slower. Baden is a great area, too, and has been stable for some time.

I am buying and going to live in Old North. I - and more importantly, my wife - wouldn't be putting our money or ourselves in a neighborhood we thought was unsafe.

Bottom line: come look and see for yourself.

St. Louis City gets a bad rap. The city is so small in sq. miles that only the most urban parts (generally urban has more crime than suburban) get figured.

There are still some parts that are dangerous. But I would think most of the city is alright. As long as you mind your own business and don't deal or buy drugs, you should be alright.

What areas were you looking at? Just wondering.

From the progress I've seen, I do think Old North St. Louis will eventually be densely filled and not be considered "the bad part of town" at some point. Probably as Old North St. Louis gets filled back up and people realize you can live there and not get shot, then rehab will expand to other areas.

Not to insult suburbanites, but I think some of them honestly think that if you live anywhere within city limits that you'll be attacked or murdered or raped. That's not necessarily the case. Car Break-ins happen, as in any city. But if you love the city it's just something you deal with. If you hate the crime that much that you can complain about it that much then volunteer to help. The only way a city gets better is if people move back in, rebuild and rehab homes, and repopulate a place.

Those who hate injustice, poverty, and crime do something about it. Those who complain about and try to ignore injustic, poverty, and crime often do nothing.

Default areas I'm looking at

I've found some properties I'm interested in in the 63115 and 63113 zip codes, between Delmar and I-70, just east of Kingshighway. The main reason I want to come to STL is the program at Independence Center for folks with mental illness (for my son who has schizophrenia), which is located on Forest Park, so I'm looking at areas convenient to that center. I don't have a definite timeline, as I plan on staying in TX to take care of my elderly mother. I've only been to STL once, for a continuing ed event, and didn't see much of the city while I was there, but want to find a good program for my son and would like to get out of the Texas heat. I also don't care much for suburban living and like diversity.

You won't find much diversity in those two zips. You're looking at 97-100% black areas.

If you share what your price range will be, we can try to find an area in your budget that will meet your needs.

If you decide to move into Old North St. Louis, there may be some resources here: Old North Saint Louis
There's a link to email them. They may have some better info for you.
Not all of North St. Louis is Old North. I believe Old North is just the area just to the north of Downtown.
There's a website for the new Crowne Plaza (14th Street) development http://www.crownvillagestl.com/
