So, we've been wanting to remodel our circa 1980's kitchen for some time, and we've decided with the economy being the way it is, maybe now's the time to do it, if there are deals to be had. Can anyone give recommendations on kitchen contractors or companies that may be having a product sale? We're wanting to replace cabinets, counters, lights, sink, etc. but not tear down walls, and will hang the cabinets ourselves. Just hoping maybe we can do it cheaper now than 3 years ago when we first started shopping around.

We remodeled our kitchen last year. I KEPT RECEIPTS
Just shopped around for the deals.
We bought our cabinets thru a lumber/hardware store called R & P lumber. They have many stores in Illinois, but we bought ours at the Troy, MO R&P store GREAT SERVICE...GREAT SELECTION...GREAT PRICES.
I SUGGEST WHEN BUYING YOUR CABINETS, TO BUY PULL OUT SHELVES. THEY ARE WONDERFUL.
Bought our tile for backsplash at the Tile Shop in St. Peters, MO.
Bought our counter top at Lowes. Best price & selection. (Cost 2750.00) They contracted out company that installed counter top (Diprimo Fabricators, Inc.... I believe they are in the Webster Groves area). They did a wonderful job. I can't brag about them enough.
Bought knobs & pulls thru Lowes.
Bought faucet thru www.faucet-warehouse.com They had great service & selection.
Bought new fridge at Sears.
OUR TOTAL COST WITH ALL ABOVE CAME TO $8500.00
There are always extras... lumber, drywall, new rangehood, joint tape, underlighting under cabinets (HIGHLY SUGGEST).
HUBBY PUT IN OUR CABINETS & DID EVERYTHING EXCEPT COUNTER TOP. IT WASN'T GUARENTEED UNLESS IT WAS INSTALLED BY A CONTRACTOR.
ONLY APPLIANCE WE BOUGHT WAS FRIDGE, THAT WAS $1600.00
WE PUT IN OUR CERAMIC TILE FLOOR YEARS AGO. WE HAVE NO NEED FOR A DISHWASHER. WE BOUGHT NEW STOVE A COUPLE YEARS AGO.
FAUCET with soap dispenser $300.00
BACKSPLASH $640.00
We just remodeled the upstairs kitchen in our 2 family to prep it for being rented out and paid under $5000 for the whole thing. We drove all the way to Fenton on I-55 to the Hoods outlet there and got all the materials for under $2500 and the install was right at $1800 with the install crew they had available. This was after checking with the local Home Depot (They wanted $8000 and that didn't include the counter top!!) and Modern Kitchens and Baths on Kingshighway (They want $6500 and what they offered didn't look very nice at all). You can see the remodel of the kitchen on our Craigslisting for the apartment. The contracters were called R & R Contracting run by two guys named Rick and Rich.

Reposting on an older thread of mine, as I thought some of you might find my encounter today with a salesperson at a certain kitchen/bath store enlightening:
We're finally moving on our kitchen remodel. When I went to the store and spoke to a salesperson, and told her about our kitchen (tiny, in a 90 year old St. Louis city house), she pointed me to the cheap cabinets/countertop area, explaining I "probably wouldn't want to spend a lot on a house there anyway." When I told her our budget for cabinets/counters (around 6-7K, installing ourselves), she actually laughed in my face, saying "nobody around HERE does a kitchen for that small amount."
So, after realizing I was getting nowhere with this woman, I went to leave, and she stopped me to give me her card, and told me to slow down on Manchester, as this is not THE CITY and people obey the speed limit here, or the police pull them over. She then proceeded into a mini-rant about never driving in THE CITY, as she knows someone in a "hoopdy car" (her words) with a ghetto blaster and no insurance will mow her down.
This is the conversation I had with a salesperson at Rsi Kitchen and Baths today. I was so insulted, I didn't even know where to begin, so I dropped her card and walked out. I don't think I've ever experienced such "classism" in all my life, or whatever you call it. Apparently I'm not worthy of buying cabinets in Rock Hill since my zip is 63109.

OMG!!!!!! and you didnt tell the manager of the store about her??
Sounds like she has serious issues, and should not be working with the public.
RSI Kitchen? Yes, we walked in there when we first started looking to redo our kitchen, and we quickly walked out too. They may do a fine job if you are willing to spend that much money, but we could tell pretty quickly that they were not in our price range. There are plenty of other places who will sell you cabinets that you install for $6-7K, but I don't think RSI is one of them. And please don't think that every store salesperson in Rock Hill is like the one you met since there are plenty of very polite retailers in Rock Hill that do not have that attitude. There are probably even much more pleasant salespeople at RSI than the one you met -- you were just unlucky to have met such an unlikeable one.
She was truthful about speeding in Rock Hill, though, since the Rock Hill Police love to ticket people speeding down Manchester or McKnight.
I know where you went before you even said RSI. Hubby & I went in there on a Sat. Seemed to only have 2 employees working, and a good 10 cars in their very small parking lot. We got the cold shoulder. They had many options to say hello, "I'm with a customer right now, I'll be with you as soon as I can". But NO...they were very rude.
We walked out & never came back.
We looked around at Lowes & found our counter top that we wanted, actually they had it as a display & I fell in love with it. It cost more than the cabinets, but the counter top is what I wanted, everytime I went in there I loved it even more.
We ended up getting some really nice kitchen cabinets at R & P lumber. There nearest location for us was Troy. I'm not sure if they have one other store in MO, the rest are in IL. Which if there is a store in IL, it just might be closer to you in the city. It's worth checking them out. Just look on Internet for their locations. Excellent service & very nice to us.
Our cabinets are wonderful. They have nice countertops as well, just not the brand I wanted at Lowes. They were fine with that.
That's a shame about RSI -- my dad used them years ago for a low-budget redo and had a great experience, but it sounds like this is a systemic issue with them. She sounds like a real piece of work -- I would call and speak with a manager. Nothing will probably happen, but it would sure make me feel better.
And Wu's right -- I'm sure she was referring to Rock Hill's own Ziggy. He rides around on this motorcycle damn near all year giving out tickets to those who dare go 3 miles over the speed limit. He must be 70+ years old and he's as crotchety as can be -- he's Rock Hill legend.
