Default Californians in St. Louis

I have noticed quite a few posts that say that people moving to St. Louis feel "out of the loop" and like everyone knows everyone and they are the odd one out. This seems like a golden opportunity. Has anyone considered forming a group in St. Louis of people who have recently moved there from other places? They will probably not have a friend-base there either. Why not get to know each other?

It always seem to be the people who complain the most about feeling lonely do the least about fixing the problem. Love all those responses!

The culture in California is different from the culture in St. Louis, and the Midwest. I must say the people here in St. Louis are friendly, but the politics of the place is not socially responsible. There is a lot of racial issues, and women are not treated as well as they are in California. These two things alone cause me to be home sick for California. It also seems that Californians are more health conscious; this includes both emotional and physical health.

Our friends here in St. Louis are transplants from Chicago, the UK, India, the north east and western U.S. Very few, if any, are born and bread St. Louisans. I believe this can be attributed to the political culture, you know values and beliefs one grew up with. That being said, I do see a big change in the Midwest, and the country as a whole, taking place.

Cultures are different in every major city in america. Stl is different from Denver, Dallas, Atlanta, etc just like LA is different from Miami, NYC, SF, or Seattle. It just takes some time to get used to a new area and surroundings. Its what you place value in the most that can make or break a city. I truely believe that if someone gives STL enough time that person will end up enjoying and appreciating the city more than they expected. How long have you been here?

We have lived here for 3 years. Our values are very different from what St. Louis has to offer. If you read my first post (New to St. Louis) you will see why we have been turned off.

I have been around the world when I served in the military, and have lived in many different cities. On a scale of 1-10, 1 being the best, I give St. Louis a 6.5.

There are things we like here, but St. Louis can't even compare to California, not even close.

Some things obviously St. Louis cannot compare to California in. We can't move the state to the ocean. We can't charge $500k for a fixer upper except maybe in some very rich suburbs. We can't offer sunshine all year round. Everybody knows that when they move to St. Louis, or the Midwest in general. You do see people water skiing on Lake of the Ozarks in summer. It's not the ocean, but it's nice. I do like the ocean, but I couldn't pack up once a year and wonder if my house will survive a hurricane. I love Missouri. It's not California obviously.

Obviously, the culture is different. Some ways maybe better some worse. Racism is a problem in St. Louis, though I don't think it's just St. Louis.

To the OP and Sacto...I haven't checked but maybe there is a group on Meetup for CA transplants? Was living in Seattle recently and they had groups for folks from elsewhere.

Welcome to MO whether here or planning to arrive in the near future...hope you didn't forget to bring the San Jose Sharks, or at least Joe Thornton, Clowe and Nabby,...miss the nights at HP for sure--nothing like a game at 'the Tank,' but the Blues are great to check out too, even if they're living up to their name a little too well these days. You can keep the Kings and Ducks though, ha ha. StL is good sports town you'll find, whether or not the teams are in top form or not.

I've lived in both CA and MO, besides many other places, and I cannot imagine anyone from the Left Coast wouldn't be welcomed here warmly. It's not like OR, WA, AZ, TX, ID or the many other places hostile to Californians, which I always find interesting because most of the Californians I knew while living there were from those places. Sorry to see one of the posters here didn't find this state much to their liking, but hey no place is quite like CA, depending upon where ya lived of course. Unless ya'all lived in a beach house or an upscale neighborhood in SF Bay then I think you'll enjoy. It is a different experience though, of course...it's the Midwest ya'all.

This is a fine/terrible place just like any other. I would compare it to Sacto, if any place in California I guess, which I found to be a nice and moderate place, although I'd only visited from the Bay Area on occasion. Somebody posted something about racism, but the last I knew the whole Rodney King thing went down in CA? I think maybe SOMEBODY is a little prejudiced toward Midwesterners maybe.... All joking aside, this place has issues like many others, but StL is a fine city to relocate to from CA or anywhere else. I wish anyone coming here from the Golden State the best of luck with your move, and if ya need any advice or questions just post cause most people around here are very helpful by nature,

You should know that we tend to barbecue children between the ages of 2-4 around here, however--females only of course...we are not uncivilized. I think that is why the other former-CA person mentioned we were somewhat intolerant maybe? In my experience we'll barbecue most anything, but in the 'Lou we love the baby back ribs. Bring a little sarcastic wit and a fair sense of humor and you'll be fine in these parts, ha ha. It's the Midwest, after all.
