Headline in todays Post-Dispatch

"City crime down, except for the killings"

Similar to saying, "Drug use down among teenagers, except for heroin"

Hmmm...that IS kind of a mixed-bag sort of report. But overall, crime is down. And that's good thing. Let's hope it continues.

It's kind of like the reports that the city population has actually increased slightly in recent years. It's not a lot, but it's a HUGE change from the decades the city hemorrhaged people.

This is a huge change too.

Too involved in my new hometown, the Bronx (Sort of the St. Louis of the five boroughs) to get to my old one. But I wanna visit SOOOO bad. Keep up the good work until I get there!

There's a great article about the causes for this in the Atlantic Monthly this month. I normally don't read magazine articles in their entirety, but this one I did. Basically he's saying that if you look at most cities throughout the US, the city centers have much less crime, but it has moved out into the county (as it has in St. Louis), because the inner city ghettoes have been emptied out (sometimes forcibly) and people from the ghetto are forced to move further out into the county and unfortunately they are taking their problems with them. Those who were most motivated to go are doing quite well, but many didn't want to move and now they are cut off from the services and public transport that were so concentrated in the city centers.

Default Most dangerous cities?

Dangerous Cities - WalletPop

I don't necessarily take a lot of stock in these lists.
We're now #4 instead of #1. Yay.

Wow but of course the media is only going to show the reports for "St. Louis City" to make sure people still believe all the hype about STL being extremely dangerous.
