It's a PDF file, so it may take a minute to come up. Basically it gives the crime numbers for different parts of the city.

Highest Total Crime Index: Central West End (1,216)

But the crime index counts all the crimes, so it's subjective to the size and population of the area.

In the Total Crime Index Dutchtown (1,053) and Downtown (1,023) came in just behind CWE.

Keep in mind the populations of each of those areas. It's interesting info anyway. The writing is awful small, so it may be easier to zoom in or print it.

In all fairness, the CWE and DT index is higher because they count a large number a crimes in the northern end of both neighborhoods. Like all crime stats its not a good measure since both areas are safe.

That's actually why I prefer crime maps because then you can see concentration and type of crime. the St. Louis metro PD has a great one online.

That is awesome news. I always said fighting the crime there is a key part of attracting people to the area, especially the empty nesters. Us young folks aren't afraid of anything, but the older suburbanites often still think of St. Louis as a dangerous cesspool.

mmmm...I remember being young and STILL not being wild about walking around downtown at night. Or at least confining my walks to very specific parts of it.

Really, when I was in my late teens, early 20's downtown was probably at it's lowest ebb. My friends and I were out all the time and went lots of places - Central West End, Soulard, Delmar loop, Grand Ave around SLU, South St. Louis, the Hill, Webster Groves, Clayton - but I can count on one hand the number of times we went downtown. Except for Kennedy's on Laclede's Landing, there was just nothing down there.

Really great to see it coming back. (Isn't there an emoticon for wiping away a tear?)

How young are you again, aragx6? I'm thinking, like, 23?

Bingo

I had a similar experience in high school though. As a kid I never went downtown except to the Cards games (and then quickly back to the 'burbs)

Last summer we went to the Art Loft Theater (on Washington) to see "Urinetown" and I was amazed, surprised, thrilled etc. by the vibrancy and progress that area had made in such a short time.
