I moved to an apartment in South City last summer. Since then, I've been graciously "borrowing" the internet from someone who didn't feel the urge to password protect theirs (thank you?). Although it's been awesome not paying for the service, it's not reliable, it's become very slow, and it only works in my bedroom (and my bathroom...). I think it's about time for me to actually get my own provider. Problem is, I don't exactly know where to go. I don't have a home phone, so DSL is out (right?). I have Directv and I think they have an internet service, but if I recall from the last time I went through this in my last town, it is wicked expensive. Charter stopped by the other day to let me know that they hadn't shut down the previous cable and to see if I want any of their services. They offered me a good deal for internet ($30/month for 12 mo...at which time I would hope to threaten termination to keep it that way), but I hear AWFUL things about Charter....many from this forum. Do I have any other options? Do I have to go with Charter?

Thanks for your help!! Oh...and the last time I was on this forum was when I was about to move and was looking for help finding a place in South City. Thanks to all who helped! I ended up finding a great place in St. Louis Hills!

AT&T doesn't like to advertise it, but in most places you can get DSL without paying for a phone line, you just have to ask. Definitely worth a try.

I just checked...apparently DSL doesn't work at my address anyway. I think that's kind of odd. It's not like I live in the middle of nowhere (like I used to when I couldn't get DSL).

Don't know cost or availability for your particular area, but esp. if mobile such as w/ laptop, a card from a wireless provider might be at least looked into.

You could try Cricket wireless. It might be a good option. I do not think that they lock you into a contract either.
