Ah yes, I really am missing out on that "modern" life. I mean right now I'm sitting in my third-world burned-out apartment building in the scary inner city typing to you on my typewriter, struggling to cut through the darkness with my kerosene lamp.

Geez, I guess that explains your hostility and inability to recognize that some of us have different needs.

Lucky you!!! I'm writing this from my bathtub where my wife, son, and myself all sleep to shield us from the gunfire. I will deliver it via Morse code to my friend with the Internets after the gunfire stops for the night (usually at day break)...he will then post it for me from Chesterfield, after he gets back from an authentic American/Italian dinner at the Cheesecake Factory and shopping at Wal Mart.

I would not recommend using Chicago as a benchmark for city living in St. Louis. These two cities really couldn't be much more different. People compare the two often since they are both midwest cities, but the differences are vast. The housing stock of St. Louis tends to be far less high-rise and apartment and more single-family homes with a yard. I see kids riding bikes down my sidewalk all the time. Schools are going to be a bigger issue than finding kid-friendly neighborhoods. Also, I don't know exactly what your expectations are culturally, but the outer burbs in St. Louis are going to be more, um, "provincial" than the outer burbs of Chicago.
With regard to the newer suburban living choice, I have some thoughts about the topic which I think I can keep civilized but its my bedtime so its going to have to wait. Suffice it to say that it is a far more complex issue than simply lifestyle choice.

I like newer homes, clean and "alike" is fine by me! I like chain restaurants, big box stores and SUVs :-); which I know many abhor. What St. Louis areas would fit the bill?

Hi again Finzup. Hoping you got some answers and direction in between all the back and forth banter. I know schools are of great importance to you, so I wanted to include the link for the Edwardsville School District - Edwardsville School District #7. The great thing about St. Louis and its surrounding communities is there is something for everyone. Good luck and I hope you find the best match for you and your family!

+1. Different people like different things. People in more urban areas for example should be more understanding of people in suburban areas and vice versa. Neither one is better than the other, merely different.
